Description
BENJAMN F. Loren-Ines, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 80,295, dated July 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTSI at: 5:11am: atmet tu it tinte 3mm; fttmt mit making tart uf its time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. Lo'rnrnen, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction and Operation of Door- Bolts; and I do declare the following `to be a full, clear, and correct description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inaking part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- I Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bolt.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same, the-bolt being thrown out.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of. the same, thc bolt being thrown in.
In the drawings, like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters-of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in certain4 improvements, as more fully hereinafter s'et forth, in Athe construction and operation of door-bolts.
The object of. the invention is to so construct the bola-that, when thrown forward into position, asshown v in figs. 1 and 2, it will be rmly secured `in position, and can only be removed from the same at thewill of the* operator. 4
To enable those skilled'in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
A shows a base-plate, upon which is secured the case B, in which the holt is held and operates. This case is slotted transversely upon its face, to allow the tongue-piece G, attached to the bolt, as hereinafter described, to enter Within it as the bolt is thrown out, and isalso slotted longitudinally, to allow the set-screw H, attached as hereinafter described, to operate freely to and' fro. The transverse slot may be made of about the same dimensonsas the tongue-piece G.
C` is the holt, securedvin the case B, and having upon its face thc fiat spring D, the forwardportion of which rises directly beneath the'tongue-piece G, sccured in a. socket in the front end of the bolt,so that itcan he elevated or depressed, as required. i
Through the case B, tongue-piece G, and spring D, is passed a set-screw, H,`Yhaving its bearing upon the bottom of the bolt-plate. The bolt-plate may be slotted upon its under side, to admit of its being passed freely over the screw passed through the bottom of the base, A, intended to hold it to the same. i
Such being the construction, the operation is vas follows: l
When the bolt is withdrawn within th'e caseB, (see iig. 3 of the drawings,) thetonguapiece is depressed beneath the case, and the spring D also has its forward end, bearing directly beneath the tongue-piece, depressed.
When the bolt has been thrown forward, as in figs. 1 and 2, the tongue-piece is brought directly beneath the transverse openingin the case B, andas this occurs, the spring, bearing upon the under side of the tonguepiece, causes the same to rise and fill the opening, against the sides of which it finds a bearing. Thus the bolt is secured iirmly in position, removable only at the will of the operator.-
The set-screw H is employed only to more thoroughly accom'plish the object of the spring D, and will be found useful whenever the spring shall have lost its tension. As this screw is depressed, it causes the tonguepiece to rise in the opening, and when desired to remove or release the bolt, the screw iselevated, andthe tongue-pece will be depressed. i v
Having thus' described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is In combination with the slotted case B, the bolt C, tonguepiece (inset-screw H, and spring D, when the same shall be constructed and roperated substantially as described, for the purposes specified.
` BENJAMIN F. LOTRIDGE.
