UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM 00D, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATCH-BOX.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,612, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed March 26, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM WOOD, aciti zen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match-boxes, and has for its object to construct a match-box adapted to hold a considerable quantity of matches, but that will permit of the extraction of but one match at a time; and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. i
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved match-box with the lid open and partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the box with the lid removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of a portion of the box. Fig. i is a perspective view of the slide which delivers the matches.
Referring now to the drawings by referenceletters, a indicates the sides of the box, and I) the ends, said ends and sides being connected together and provided with a suitable base c, thus forming the box, which is supported by suitable feet cl. An inclined false bottom 6 extends from the front of the box to the top of the same at the rear, and at this point is hinged the lid f, which is provided at its forward end with a hasp g, which engages a staple h, secured in the end, said staple being adapted to receive a lock 70 to prevent the opening of the lid. At the base of the false bottom is arranged a V-shaped slide 5, which is provided with a groove on to receive the Serial No. 629,384. (No model.)
match, said slide operating through slots 11. n in the sides of the box and having attached thereto a rod 0, provided with a knob 19, and on its oppositeend the said slide is provided with a frictional surface q for striking the match.
The matches are placed in the box and rest upon the false bottom, which by reason of its incline serves to keep the matches at all times resting upon the slide, while the groove in said slide is adapted to be of sufficient size to admit of but one match, and when it is desired to extract a match from the box the slide is pulled outward by means of the handle or rod, which permits a match to drop into the groove, and when the slide is forced. in the opposite direction the match remains in the groove and is carried outward, as shown in Fig. 1, where it may be removed and the operation repeated.
The box may be provided with the inscription as shown or other suitable ones, and it will be observed that the shape as shown in the drawings is not necessary to the operation of the box, as any suitable shape may be employed with the same'principle.
It will also be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction -without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a match-box, a suitable box having a lid hinged thereto, and a lock for securing said lid, a false bottom in said box, said bottom arranged at an incline sloping toward the front of the box, and a V-shaped slide operating through the sides of the box at the base of the false bottom, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM woon.
