PEN-GUIDE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,008, dated June 22, 1897'.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that 1, ROBERT L. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a pen-guide for penholders, whereby the penholder and pen are steadied while being used, of simple, strong, .and durable construction, reliable in operation, and easily adjusted to penholders of various makes and construction.

The invention consists in the improved penguide and its combination with the penholder, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of theseveral views, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a penholder provided with my improvement and illustrated in working or operative position; Fig. 2, an enlarged underneath View of the penholder and pen-guide; Fig. 3, a side elevation of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4:, a top plan View of Fig. 3, the penholder and pen being shown in dotted lines.

In said drawings, a represents the stem, Z) the ferrule arranged on said stem, and c a pen inserted in said ferrule, all of the usual and well-known construction.

The ferrule b is provided on its under side and inner portion with an elongated slot 12, communicating with a recess (1, arranged in the stoma. The recess a is penetrated by a horizontally-arranged pin d at right angles to the slot 1), on which pin is fulcrumed or pivotally secured the inwardly extending looped portion (1 of the pen-guide d. The said pen-guide d is preferably made of wire, and consists of the central portion or shank d, the substantially semicircular shaped spring-loop 01 and the forwardly and outwardly projecting arm d terminating in the curved rest 01 and of the looped portion d above referred to. The central portion or shank d is adapted to bear on the under side of the ferrule 19, while the spring-loop engages the forward lower portion of said ferrule and by its spring action securely holds said penguide in contact with and in normal or working position on the ferrule 19. The arm 61 which is preferably integral with the looped portion (1 of the pen-guide 61, projects from the latter forwardly and outwardly to the right, and is of such a length that its curved portion or rest is about in the same plane as the point of the pen 0, as clearly shown in the drawings.

When the pen-guide is in use, its rest or curved portion (1 will rest upon the paper, and thus assist the hand in steadying the pen and penholder, which will be found of great advantage and utility by persons having an unsteady or trembling hand.

When the pen is to be dipped into the inkstand, the pen-guide is swung into the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

I do not intend to limit myself to the precise construction shown and described, as various alterations can be made without changingthe scope of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A pen guide comprising a shank, a spring-loop on the forward end of said shank, an arm carried by said spring-loop and projecting outward and forward from the righthand side thereof, and means for pivotally securing said shank to a penholder, substantially as described.

2. A pen guide comprising a shank, a spring-loop on the forward end of said shank, an arm projecting forward and outward from the right-hand side of said spring-loop, and having its free end terminating in a curved rest, and means for pivotally securing said shank to a penholder, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a penholder, of a shank pivotally secured to said penholder and adapted to bear on the under side of its ferrule, a spring-loop carried by the free end of said shank and adapted to engage the said ferrule, an arm projecting outwardly and forwardly from the right-hand side of said springloop, substantiallyas and for the purposes described.

4C. The combination With a penholder, of a shank pivotally secured to said penholder and adapted to bear on the under side of its ferrule, a spring-loop carried by the forward end of said shank and adapted to engage the said ferrule, an arm projecting forward and outward from the right hand side of said spring-loop, and provided on its free end with a curved rest, substantially as and for the purposes described.
