Description
T. OUILLET] PENHOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV- 6 I913.
' Patented Apr. 18, 1916.

PEINHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application filed November 6, 1913. Serial No. 799,536.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS OUILLET, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Central Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in penholders, the primary object of which resides in the provision of a novel means whereby a pen-point may be conveniently and expeditiously removed from the holder without contact of the users fingers with the point.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a retaining means for the point.
A further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of this character which is simple, durable in construction, and efficient in its operation.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevational view of my invention; Fig. 2 represents a verticallongitudinal section of my invention in closed position; Fig. 3 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my invention in open position, and, Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the spring member of my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals clesignate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 1 represents a handle having a portion of one end reduced to provide a shoulder. Secured upon this reduced end is a ferrule 2 having its outer end flared as shown at 3. The inner periphery of the ferrule 2 and the reduced portion form a recess 4 in which is secured by means of a pin 5 a leaf spring 6- consisting of a strip of metal bent upon itself to provide uniform arms 7 and 8, the arms being also curved transversely into a conveXo-concavo form. It is to be noted that the pin 5 holds the spring in close relation with the inner end of the recess and thereby prevents unnecessary and accidental movement of the spring when the penholder is being used. At a point directly above the cut-away portion in the ferrule 2 is a longitudinal slot 9. Ears 10 are formed integral with the ferrule adjacent the sides of the slot 9.
For the purpose of retaining a pen-point in position between the uniform arms 7 and 8 I have arranged an L-shaped trigger 11 in the longitudinal slot in the ferrule through the medium of a pivot pin mounted in the ears 10. The inner or short end of the trigger is rounded so as to conform to the uniform arms 7 and 8.
In the operation of my device in order to extract a pen-point all that is necessary is to raise the handle of the trigger. This releases the spring arms and the pen-point falls out. To insert a pen-point I place the rear end of the pen-point between the arms of the spring and at the same time press the handle of the trigger downward, which causes the curved inner end of the trigger to frictionally engage one of the arms and consequently clamp a pen-point between the arms.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates that modifications may be-made in detail without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i A pen holder including a handle having one end reduced to provide a shoulder, a ferrule on said reduced end providing a recess, said ferrule provided with a longitudinal slot opposite said reduced end, a leaf spring bent upon itself to provide uniform arms, said arms being conveXo-concavo in form and arranged in the. recess, a pin extending through said ferrule and engaging the bend in the spring for maintaining said spring in close relation with the shoulder for preventing accidental or unnecessary movement of the 'arms in the recess, and an L-shapedjtrigger pivotally mounted on said ferrule having the inner end pointed and arranged, at times, in frictional engagement with one of said arms for remov ably' hold ing a pen-point'between th e arms.
Copies of this. patent may .be obtained for'jfive' centsp'each', by addressingthe Commissioner In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. t
