UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL SPEARS, OF LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.
SPlKE- EXT RACTOR.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,865, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed May 16, 1887. Serial No. 238.386. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it'known that I, EMANUEL SPEARS, of Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to, make and use the same.
My invention relates to spike-extractors, the object being to provide a device of this character of cheap and simple construction adapted for use upon rails of different heights.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved device applied to a railroad-rail,"with a portion of the head broken away. Fig, 2 represents a front View of my invention, and Fig. 3 is a view taken from the under side.
A represents a lever formed with an offset, 13, from which depends a claw-head, G.
The head 0 is centrally slotted to permit of the attachment of apivoted swinging claw, D, the stem d of which is formed with a series of openings, E, through one of which is passed a pin, F. The head 0 terminates in claw-fingers c. In lieu of separating the sides of the claw D, I recess each side to form opposite openings G, to receive the head of the spike to be drawn. This construction enables me to grasp the head of the spike on three sides, instead of on only two sides, as would be the case if the openings G extended across the claw-head.
The lever end of the lever A is formed with a curved seat, a, adapted to rest upon the tread of the rail.
It will be observed that by formingath'roughopening in the depggding head 0 and inserting the perforated stem of the swinging claw, I am enabled to adjust the latter to different heights by removing the pivotal pin F and replacing it at the desired point, and thus the device'is adapted for use upon rails of various heights.
- I am aware that it is .not broadly new to combine aswinging claw with a fixed claw-head and lever; hence I do not claim such a combination, broadly; but I construct my swing ing claw circular in form, provided with'opposite openings G G, thus insuring contact with three sides of the spike-head in use, and consequently a stronger hold upon the spike.
Again, I pivot the stem of the swinging claw adjust-ably within the slot of the fixed claw.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination, with the lever having an offset, B, and a seat, a, of an integral fixed clawhead, 0, slotted as described, and a swinging claw, D, having opposite openings G G, to permit the head of the spike to be grasped on three sides, and provided with a perforated stem, d, which is adj ustably pivoted within the slot of the fixed claw-head, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses.
EMANUEL SPEARS.
Witnesses: JOHN T. MCHUGH, HARRY HERRMAN.
