CHARLES H. DIXSON, OF WILDWOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO LATIMER R. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE AND BOX-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,722, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed May 16, 1896. Serial No. 591,842. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DIXSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wildwood, in the county of Cape May and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges and Box-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to an improved hinge and box or tray support.
My object is to provide a combined hinge and support particularly adapted for use in connection with display trays or boxes, so thatthe tray or box will be supported in an inclined position when the cover is opened.
The invention consists of certain novel features and combinations, as will appear more in detail in the following description and claims and in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a display-box provided with my improvements and shown in open position; Fig. 2, an end elevationthereof, and Fig. 3 an end elevation showing the display-box closed.
A display-box is designated by the numeral 1 as being suitably filled with cigars. The cover 2 of this box is connected thereto by my improved hinge, now to be described. The hinge connections being the same at both ends of the box a description of one will suflice.
A bell-crank lever 3, pivoted to the box by a nail or screw 4, has one of its arms 5 suitably secured to the edge of the cover by fastening devices 6. The other arm 7 of the bellcrank lever is pivotally connected at 8 to a leg or support 9, which is provided with a guide-slot 10, through which passes a nail or screw 11.
The pivotal connection 8 may be of any preferred construction and does not therefore need any further description.
The box need not necessarily be provided with the supporting-legs, as it is apparent that they could be dispensed with and the bell-crank levers alone used to form a combined hinge and brace for the cover.
In the present instance I have shown the invention applied to a display-box, but it may be used in connection with any style of box.
The operation of the invention is at once so simple and obvious that it needs no description.
Many slight changes of construction might be resorted to, and I do not therefore limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, but consider myself entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a display-box, and a cover therefor, of hinge-levers connected to the cover and pivoted to the box, and having free portions, legs pivoted to the free ends of the hinge-levers and provided with slots, and pins connected to the box and received in the slots.
2. The combination with a display-box and cover therefor, of hinge-levers connected to the cover and pivoted to the box, being provided with forwardly-extendin g free portions, supporting-legs provided with straight slots and pivoted to the forward rear ends of the hinge-levers, and pins connected to the box and received in said slots.
3. The combination with a display-box and cover therefor, of a bell-crank lever having one arm connected to the cover and which is pivoted to the box, and a leg or support having one of its ends pivoted to the other arm of the bell-crank lever and its remaining end free, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a box, and a cover therefor, of levers connected to the cover and pivoted to the box in such manner as to provide a combined hinge and brace for the cover, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a box, and a cover therefor, of hinge levers connected to the cover and pivoted to the box in such manner 9 that the rear edge of the cover will rest against the back side of the box when said cover is opened, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. DIXSON.
