Description
P. H. GHILDRESS. BURNER ATTACHMENT FOR LAMPS.
(No Model) Patented May 11, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PATRICK II. OHILDRESS, OF WAYNESBOROUGH, VIRGINIA.
BURNER ATTACHMENT FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,455, dated May 11, 1897.
Application filed June 25, 1896.
To aZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK H. CHILD Ess, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaynesborough, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burner Attachments for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in burner attachments to lamps; and it consists in certain improvements in lamp-chimneys and in holders for the said chimneys which are hereinafter described and claimed,
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout both views.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a lamp-chimney constructed in accordance with my invention and mounted in my improved holder; and Fig. 2 represents a section of the lamp chimney, detached from the holder, along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and looking down.
A represents a lamp-chimney the upper portion of which is constructed in the usual or any preferred shape, while the lower portion A is preferably made cylindrical, as shown,
and is provided at or about the middle of the said cylindrical portion with a plurality of curved ribs a, rounded at the edges, as at a, with guide-passages a between these rounded edges, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2.
The burner is provided with a base-piece B, rigidly attached thereto, with holdingarms B which are curved outwardly, as at b, to fit over the curved ribs a. These holdingarms B may be made resilient, as in the ordinary form of burner, but are preferably made more or less rigid, as shown in Fig. 1, where the said arms are of considerable depth and-curved outward, as at b and b, the flare I) being to more conveniently center the lampchimney A on these holding-arms B The said arms are of such a width as to pass freely into the guide-passages a and the curved portion 1) fits snugly over the ribs a when the lamp-chimney is revolved through a small angle after being put down on the base-piece B. In order to secure the lamp-chimney in place on the lamp, it will be sufficient to press the lamp-chimney down on the flaring portions 6 of the various holding-arms B and Serial No. 596,866. (No model.)
then give it a slight rotation to the right or left until the passages o coincide with these arms B when the lamp-chimney will slip down and rest on the base-piece B, and then a twist of the lamp-chimney through a small angle to the right or left will lock the chimney in place. It can be readily removed by reversing the operation.
While I have shown four of the holdingarms 13? and four of the guide-passages d any desired number of these holding-arms and guide-passages greater than one may be provided, but whatever the number may be they should be symmetrically disposed around I Bylthis improved construction it will be seen that the base of the lamp-chimney can be cyliudrical instead of flaring outward, as is ordinarily the case, thus insuring the somewhat reduced cost in manufacture. Moreover, it will be obvious that the lamp-chimney will be held firmly in place while in use and may be readily and conveniently detached at any time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination with the 1am p-chimney A having cylindrical lower portion A provided with segmental ribs at around the middle of said cylindrical portion, having rounded ends a, and having guide-passages between the ends of said ribs; of the burner B having base B; rigid holding-arms 13 secured to said base, and having curved portions 17 adapted to fit over said ribs a, and flaring ends b serving as guides for said holding-arms and as supports for the body of the chimney, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
