Description

A. 1. JOHNSON.
LANTERN.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1. 1918.
WI ESSES ATTORNEY ANDREW J- JOHN N, 0F GREEN BAY, I QQN- llf- LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed May 7, 1918. Serial No. 233,123,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AN REW J. Jo NsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at GreenBay, in the countyof Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lanterns, and moreparticularly to safety lanternsfor use on Christmas trees.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap light of this character Which, while being absolutely safe will yet diffuse a maximum quantity of light of any color desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap light of this character, in which the light producing medium may be quickly and easily removed and replaced.
Another object is to provide means capable of performing the double function of a suspension device and a deflector holder.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a lantern constructed in accordance with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
The lantern constituting this invention,
which is especially designed for use as a Christmas tree light, comprises a tubular member 1 preferably cylindrical in form, although not necessarily so, and which is composed of mica or other suitable transparent, non-frangible material, and which may be colored to suit the user.
This cylinder 1 is arranged on a sleeve 2 composed of thin tin, aluminum, or other suitable metal, the-lower end of the cylinder being shown arranged abutting the upper end of the sleeve, and it is connected thereto by means of a bail or U-shaped brace member 10, the arms 11 and 12 of which straddle the cylinder and are secured thereto and to said sleeve at diametrically opposite receive a headed stud 4 which projects laterally from one side wall of a base or candle carrying member 5. This member 5 is made cup-shaped and has a socket 6 flared to receive a candle C. It will thus be seen that the candle carrying member 5 may be readily inserted or detached by exerting a slight twist thereon toward the right or the left to connect or disconnect the bayonet slot 3 with the head of the stud 4.
As shown, the candle carrying member has a flared base 7 and is provided with an annular shoulder 8 on which the lower end of the sleeve 2 rests as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.
A top or deflector 9 is supported above the upper of the cylinder 1 and projects laterally beyond the side walls thereof, being designed to deflect the products of combustion as they rise from the candle to prevent burning of objects disposed above the candle. This top 9 is here shown in the form of a transparent disk having recesses 9 disposed at diametrically opposite points in its periphery, which are designed to receive the arms 11 and 12 of the combined brace and suspension member 10. The cross bar 13 of the bail shaped member extends above the disk 9 and is connected therewith by a suspension element in the form of an eye bolt 14. The eye 15 of this bolt is designed to receive a fine wire or other means for attaching the lantern to a branch of a Christmas tree or to any other suitable support.
While the light producing medium is here shown and described as a candle, it is of course to be understood that a lamp may be used as a substitute for the candle without departing from the scope of this invention.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, ct a1, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s: v
A lantern of the class described comprising a tubular body member of transparent non-frangible material, a thin metal sleeve arranged flush with the lower end of said member with their adjacent ends abutting,
an inverted U-shaped brace composed of a" member having a laterally prOJecting headed stud for detachable connection with the slot in said sleeve,a disk-shaped deflector hav-. v111g dlametrlcally opposite recesses to receive the arms of said brace, the periphery of said deflector extending laterally beyond the side walls of the body member, and a suspension element in the form of an eye bolt extending through said curved brace portion and defiector, the eye portion proj ectingoutwardly to form a suspension device.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
