I ATTORNEYS.
Nrirnn STATES ATENT rrIcE.
SOI'IMITT dz IIASSELBRING, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
NAlVllE-PLATE FOR UMBRELLA-CLOSING BANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 581,583, dated April 27, 189 7. Application filed July 15, 1896. Serial No. 599,326. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HASSELBRING, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Name Plate for Umbrella Closing Bands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved name, identification, or ornamental plate for embellishing the closing-band of an umbrella, thereby heightening the appearance of the umbrella and at the same time forming an identifying-mark for the owner.
The invention consists in a bottom plate secured to the socket member of an ordinary glove-fastener and in a convex name-plate secured to the said bottom plate and inclosing the socket of the fastener.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section of the improvement.
The closing-bandA for the cover B of an umbrella is fastened at one end to the cover, and after the band is passed around the folded-up cover the two ends of the band are fastened together by a button O. This button O is of the usual construction and is shown in Fig. 2 and is provided with a stud member O, secured on that end of the band Aattached to the cover B. The socket member 0 of the button is attached to the free end of the band A, and said socket membeigwith its shank 0 passes through an aperture in the band A to engage with its upper end a cap 0*, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 2.
Now in assembling the two members of the socket member O I place a bottom plate D, having a central opening I), upon the shank O previous to putting the cap 0 in place, so that the said bottom plate D rests on the top of the band A, and then the cap 0 is forced or pressed in place on the shank O by spreading the upper end of the latter within the cap with a suitable tool in a Well-known manner. Thus the bottom plate D is fastened in place to the bottom and over the band A under the cap O Now I fasten a convex name-plate E upon the edge of the bottom plate, so that this name-plate extends over the cap 0, and consequentlyincloses the latter between the bottom plate and the plate E.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the edge of the name-plate E is crimped upon the edge of the bottom D, and the said name-plate is curved to extend over the cap 0, and the outer face of the name-plate is ornamented in any suitable manner and provided with the name or monogram of the owner of the umbrella.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the name-plate E extends transversely of the band and projects beyond the edges thereof. It is evident that the band A can be readily opened and closed in the usual manner by disconnecting and connecting the members of the button 0 in the usual manner.
Aname-plate made of silver or gold gives a very fine appearance to the umbrella and completely hides the unsightly button noW generally employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a glove-fastener, consisting in a socket and a stud member, a bottom plate secured to the socket member and running out laterally therefrom, and a convex name-plate having its edges secured to the edges of the bottom plate, the name-plate inclosing the upper portion of the socket member, substantially as described.
JOHN I-IASSELBRING.
