J. L. THOMSON. SADDLE PAD FASTENING.
No. 581,565. Patented Apr. 27, 1897.
\XATNEEEEE: |N\/ENTEIR1 MhW QMJMLM W Q ZW Nrrnn S rarns JUDSON L-TIIODISON, OF VVALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
SADDLE-PAD FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,565, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed June 11, 1896. Serial No. 595,100. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jonson L. THoMsoN, of Valtham, in the county of hliddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Pad Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that part of a harness termed the saddle, and has particular reference to the means for securing the pad under the arch of the saddle.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the pad may be removably connected with the saddle and adapted to crowd the pad into the arch in such manner that even frequent removal of the pad will not affect its proper retention in position when replaced.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as herein described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is an elevation of so much of a harness-saddle as is necessary to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end of the pad and showing the clamping-hook. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower end of the saddle-arch and showing also the lower end of the pad with its interchanging hoolclever.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several views.
In the drawings, a indicates a harness-saddle provided with the usual terrets and having at each end an eye Z), consisting of a plate projecting beyond the end of the saddle-body and provided with a slot.
0 indicates the removable pad or housing,
to each end of which is secured a cam-lever cl, adapted to engage the eye I). The construction of this cam-lever is similar to a wellknown form of overshoefastening, as shown in the drawings, but I do not restrict myself to this particular form. As shown in the drawings, the lever is provided with flattened trunnions, which are held between a baseplate (1 and a spring-plate 61 the said two plates being permanently connected together and to the end of the pad.
hen it is desired to remove the pad from the saddle, the lever d is turned, so that it may be readily withdrawn from the slot of the plate I). hen the pad is to be replaced, the levers d are reinserted through the plates 6, and the downward movement of the free ends of the lever at each end causes an upward movement of the end of the pad, thus crowding the pad back into place in the arch of the saddle-body.
The fastening is entirely concealed under the girth-strap e, and takes the place of straps and buckles heretofore used, extending around the saddle.
It will be seen that the slotted plates affixed to the saddle and the cam-levers pivoted to the pad constitute coupling devices, which not only exert an upward pressure on the pad, forcing it closely against the arch, but also positively hold or look the ends of the pad to the saddle, so that they cannot slip in any direction, the central portion of the pad being prevented from slipping edgewise by its firm bearing on the arch. Hence there is no liability of the displacement of the pad in any direction.
I claim- 1. The combination of a harness-saddle arch, a removable pad formed to fit the under side of said arch, and coupling devices applied to the arch and pad and having provisions for pressing the pad upwardly against the arch and for positively securing the ends of the pad to the corresponding portions of the arch.
2. In a harness-saddle, the combination with the arch a having a plate I) at each end provided with a slot, of the pad 0 provided with the spring-pressed cam-lever (1 adapted to pass through' the slot of the plate Z) and force the pad into place in the arch, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of June, A. D. 1896.
JUDSON L. THOMSON.
