` PATENT OFFICE.
W'ALLACE R. DUNBAR, OF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
DRUM-T'UG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,008, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed March 4, 1903. Serial No. 146,114. (No model.)l i
To (bZZ'wz/om/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVALLACE R. DUNBAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum-Tugs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tugs for drums having a loop sliding upon the straining strings or cords, by means of which the heads of the drum may be tightened or loosened; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which will not slip, and thus permit the strings or cords to become slack. l
The invention is an improvement on that described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 300,469, dated October 2, 1888, and is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the accompanying' drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in both of the views, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a drum provided with my improved tug, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the tug detached.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a a drum of the usual form, and this drum is provided with tugs l? made according to my invention, said tugs being used in connection with the straining strings or cords c. The tugs l) may be composed of any desired metal, and, as in the patent hereinbefore referred to, consist of a loop lf2, open at the back, as shown at b3, whereby two hooks h4 are formed, and said l loop is provided with a downwardly-directed ture or opening b3 between the ends of the hook-shaped members h4 of said loop, and said tugs may be drawn down upon the strings or cords for tightening them and upwardly for the purpose of loosening said strings or cords by means of the tongue or flap 115. The loopA b2 may loe made of any desired form orornamentation, and the back portion of said loop may be of any desired length, and the said loop may thus be given the desired strength and durability, and the opening b3 being at the back of the loop b2 the tugs may easily be slipped on or otf the strings or cords. All these features of construction are the same as those in the patent hereinbefore referred to; but in my invention l form on the front of the loop b2 an upwardly-directed extension d, having a cross-head cl2, which, as shown in the drawings, is secured thereto by a screw or other device d3; but said cross-head may be formed integrally with the upwardly-directed extension d if desired, and said cross-head. is provided in its opposite ends with vertically arranged grooves dthroughwhich the strings or cords c are passed. The cross-head d2, around which the strings or cords c are passed, forms a spreader for said strings or cords and prevents the tugs from slipping, as will be readily understood, said strings or cords being held or bound between said cross-head and the loop b2. As heretofore constructed the tugs after they become a little worn would slip on the strings or cords and could not be retained in place, so as to give the desired tension to said strings or cords, and this resulted in great inconvenience and trouble; but with my improvement the strings or cords are forced apart immediately above the loop 112 and held tightly against the sides of said loop, thereby avoiding the slipping of the tugs on the strings or cords and holding them securely in place.
My improvement does not add materially to the cost of these tugs as formerly made and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described inay be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
IOO
Having` fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A drum-tug` consisting of a loop open at one side and provided with a lining Which is secured to the closed side thereof and which projects below said loop, the closed side of said loop being,` also provided with an upwardly-directed extension having' a cross-head provided with grooves in its opposite ends, substautially as shown and described.
2. A drum-tug comprising a central loop open at one side and provided With a leather lining which is secured therein and which is also open at said side, and provided With a doWnWardly-directed extension, the loop being provided at the closed sidc with an up Wardly-directed extension having,` a crosshead at its upper end, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the class described, a loop open at one side, andthe closed side of which is provided with an upwardly#directed eXtension having a cross-head provided at its opposite ends with vertically arranged grooves, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as niy invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing;` Witnesses, this 21st day of February, 1908.
