EDXVARD GEO. LANE, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
POCKET CIGARETTE-MAKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,560, dated April 27, 1897. Application filed June 6, 1896. Serial No. 594,472. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Gnonon LANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Cigarette-Making Devices, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in pocket cigarette-making devices, the ob ject of the invention being to provide an article of this character adaptable for making cigarettes of a uniform size in such a manner as to avoid wasting any of the material used.
The device is simple in construction, iuexpensive, and durable.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the a11- neXed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing a plunger, forming part thereof, removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the filling-cylinder, forming part of the device. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation of the device; and Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional elevation of a portion thereof, showing a cigarette made and ready for removal.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular casing A, preferably of sheet metal. This said casing is adapted to be closed at its lower end by means of a cap A, which said cap fits snugly over the lower end of the said casing.
The cap is provided upon its inner surface with an annular projection CL, which forms a shoulder for engagement with the lower edge of the casing A, whereby an even annular compartment is provided from the head of the cap to the upper edge of the casing when the two said parts are adjusted to each other, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
At the upper edge of the casing A, I provide an L-shaped slotc, which is adapted for engagement with a pin 1), which is extended radially from a tube B, which said tube is supplied at its upper end with a conical receiver B.
In the operation of the device a sheet of paper 0 is wrapped around the tube B to form a cylinder for retaining the tobacco, and preferably the edge e of the said sheet 0 should be moistened or mucilaged, whereby it will adhere to the body of the cylinder when it is completely rolled. Having rolled the paper upon the tube B, the projecting end 0 of the cylinder thus formed should be turned over, whereby a head 0 is provided. Having thus formed the paper cylinder, the tube B and the said cylinder are inserted within the casing A until the head of the paper cylinder is forced against the inner surface of the head of the cap A. The tube is then revolved until its projection 11 is in engagement with the horizontal portion of the L-shaped slot at of the casing A, whereby the parts are securely locked to each other. The tube B is then supplied with a filling of tobacco 0 through the medium of the funnel B, and this said filling of tobacco is then packed down tightly by means of a plunger A after which the plunger and the tube B are removed, whereby the tobacco filling G will be transferred to the paper cylinder, thus forming a completed cigarette, which is retained within the casing A, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. To remove the cigarette from the said casing, it is simply necessary to disengage the cap A from the end thereof and pull the cigarette out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a cylindrical casing having a removable cap on the lower end thereof, and a tubular feeder having a flaring mouth thereon and means for locking the feeder and casing to each other, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a cylindrical casing having a removable cap thereon and an L- shaped slot in the outer end thereof; with a tubular feeder having a pin projected therefrom for engagement with the said slot, said feeder being supplied with a flaring mouth for receiving a charge of tobacco, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of June,
EDWARD GEO. LANE. lVitnesses:
JOHN MoGnnnvv, JAoon LANE.
