Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 21, 1909 Application filed. September 18, 1909. Seriall No. 518,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED E. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Courtland, in the county of Sacramento andv State of California, have invented a new and Improved Cherry-Pitter, of which the following. is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.A
' ll y invention relates to cherry pitters, and it has for its object to provide a cherry pitter that will remove the pits from cherries without mutilating the cherries.
Another object of my invention is topprovide a cherry pitter which will remove the pits without punching holes through the cherries, thus saving considerable fruit.'
Still other .objects of my invent-ion will appear in the following complete description. y
In this specification I will-describe the preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims,
Reference vis to be had to the accompanying drawings formin a part of this specification, rin which simi ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
' '.Figure 1 is a' side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the tube penetrating the 1cherry and engaging the pit; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my invention, showin lthe manner in which the pit is removed rom the tube; and Fig. 4 is an enlargedsectional view showin the tube of my invent-ion as it engages t e pit of a cherry, permitting of its removal.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a tu e 5 is provided, which is secured to a handle 6, there being an opening 7 in the handle which extends through one of its sides, the opening 7 in the handle communicating with the tube 5 through an oritice 8. 1 In this orifice 8 is disposed a plunger 9, the plunger 9 having its upper terminal 10 bent laterally and extending through the opening in the side (ff the handle 6, the
' extreme end of the terminal being bent annularly to form a thumb piece. Between the terminal 10 ofthe plunger 9 and the orifice S, there is disposed about the plunger a circular spring 1l, which is adapted to` hold the terminal 12 of the plunger yieldingly Within the tube A5. In constructing the tube 5 the edges 13 are. preferably spaced a short distance each other, so that thedameter of the terminal of the tube may increase slightly when it engages the pit 14 of theV i cherry 15. i
In using mylinvention, the o erator takes the pitter by the handle`6 an presses the terminal of the tube 5 into the' cherry 15 at theplace from which thelstem has been removed, -the terminal of the tube engaging and encircling the it 14 of the cherry, as shown in Fig. 4. hen the pitter is withdrawn fromthe cherry the pit is removed from the pitter by pressing downwardly the thumb piece 10, which causes the plungery 9 to force the pit-14 fromy the. tube, as best shown in Fig. 3. f1 i Having t us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.:
'1. In a cherry pitter, a handle, a tube mounted thereon, which is adapted to have its terminal inserted in a cherry at the place fromwhich the stem of the cherry has been removed, a plunger disposed in the tubel adapted to remove the pits therefrom, there being a slot in the handle, a thumb piece secured to the plunger disposed throughv the slot, and a spring adapted to hold the plunger awa from the terminal of the tube.
2. n a c erry pitter, a handle, a tube Iliade of resilient material mounted thereon, having a longitudinal slot therein which permits pits to expand the tube, and the pits to be held within the tube by the resilient properties of the tube, the tube being adapted.to have its terminal inserted in a cherry,
a plunger disposed in the tube adapted to remove pits therefrom, and means adapted to operate the plunger,
3. In a' cherry pitter, a handle, a tube made of resilient material mounted thereon, having a longitudinal slot therein which permits pits to expand the'tube, and the its to be held within the tube by the resilient properties of the tube, the tube beingadapted to have its terminal inserted in a cherry, a plunger dis osed in the tube adapted to remove pits t crcfrom, there being a slot. in the handle, a thumb piece secured to the plunger disposed tlirough the slot, and a spring adapted for. holdin the plunger yieldingly in a predei'eimine position.
4. In a cherry pitter, a handle, a tube disposed in the'tube adapted to 'relilove 1pits name to this specication in the presence of therefrom; there being a slot inthej hand e, a two subscribing witnesses. thumb iece secured to the handle'disposed throughptheslot, and a s ing adapted foi- -FRED E' GREENE' 5 holding the plunger yiel ingly in a predeI Wlsnesses':l
