EDWARD CURRAN SMITH, OF SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
MUCILAGE-BRUSH.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,013, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed July 7, 1896.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Beitknown that I, EDWARD CURRAN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mucilage- Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partthereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in brushes of the class especially adapted for use as mucilage-brushes, the object of the invention being to provide an article of this character which is so constructed as to normally maintain the brush portion thereof out brush, illustrating the same in engagement with the neck of a mucilage-bottle.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cylinder of metal or other suitable material A. YVithin the lower end of this cylinder is secured a cylindrical box B, which said box has a solid head 1) upon the upper end thereof and which is open at its lower end.
Engaging with the box B is a head or plunger C, which has a brushD attached thereto. This said brush when contracted fills the entire area of the box 13, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, but when it is released from the said box its bristles will expand approximately, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Telescoping with the upper end of the cylinder A is a cylinder A, which has a closed head thereon, from which head is projected a rod E, which is secured at its lower end to the sliding head 0 of the brush D, and to maintain the brush D in its closed position, as
Serial No. 598,279. (No model.)
illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, a normally-expanded spiral spring F is provided, which said spring occupies the entire vertical space between the head I) of the box B and the head aof the cylindrical section A, where- 'by said section will be normally maintained in an upward position.
As a means for engaging the inner edge of the neck of the bottle G the cylinder A is provided with a spherical stopper A which said stopper is adapted for engagement with bottles of various sizes. Said stopper is also adapted for verticaladjustment upon the cylindcr A, whereby the end of said cylinder can be extended into bottles for any desired depth.
In the operation of the device the end of the cylinder will be normally maintained above the level of the mucilage contained in the bot tle, and when it is desired to extract mucilage therefrom the cylindrical section A will be pressed downwardly, whereby the brush D will be forced into the mucilage, which can then be applied to any suitable surface adapted to be mucilaged.
when pressure is released from the head a of the cylinder A, the brush will. be carried back automatically into the box B, and any surplus mucilage contained in the brush will be scraped off upon the edge of the box and dropped back into the bottle by the act of compressing the bristles forming the brush.
I have described my invention as being specially adapted for use as a mucilage-brush, but it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am not confined to any special application of the device. It is obvious that I am entitled to slight variations in the mere mechanical details of constructing the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A brush comprising a telescopic cylinder having its outer section normally maintained in an upward position by means of a springpressed rod, said rod engaging with the brushhead, which head and brush engage with a box rigidly located within the lower end of the telescopic cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a cylinder having a box in its lower end with a head thereon and use a rod which passes through said head and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as has a brush attached to its lower end and a my invention I havesigned my name, in pl'es- 1o sliding cylinder attached to its upper end,the once of two witnesses, this 2d day of July, two said parts being normally pressed apart 1896.
5 by means of a spiral spring surrounding the EDWARD CURRAN SMITH.
said rod, the said cylinder being supplied with Witnesses a stopper o1- collar for engagement with a bot- MAROELLA G. MAOLEAN, tle, substantially as shown and described. EMILY SEIDLER.
