UNITED STATES Enron.
I ATENT MEDOREM WILLIAM GREER, OF MENLO HEIGHTS, CALIFORNIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,552, dated April 27, 1897.
I Application filed April 6,1896. Serial No. 586,385. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MEDOREM WILLIAM GREER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Menlo Heights, in the county-of San Mateo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Doors or Windows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to means for fastening doors, hinged windows, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an effective-device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be easily and quickly connected with the frame of a door or window; and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front View of a door provided with my improved fastening device, and Fig. 2 a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view showing the yoke and parts supported thereby.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, A represents an ordinarydoor-frame, and hinged therein at a is a door B, which is provided with the usual knob b and the usual look, (not shown,) and in the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device comprising a chain, rope, or cable D, to each end of which is secured a clamp d and in which is placed an oblong plate or link d I also provide a plate G, the inner side of which is provided with a washer g, of felt or similar material, and the outer side of which is provided with a yoke 9 through the cross-head g of which is passed a bolt g on the lower end of which is a ratchet-wheel g and on the upper end a crank 9 and pivotally connected with the cross-head g of said yoke is a pawl II, which is adapted to operate in connection with the ratchet 9 The plate or link 01 is rigidly connected with the crankrod or bolt 9 and when said rod or bolt is turned the plate or link (1 is also turned, and the separate ends of the chain D may thus be drawn together.
lVhen it is desired to fasten the door, the
clamps d are connected with the frame on the opposite sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the plate G is pressed against the door and the crank is turned to the desired eX- tent and the oblong plate or link 61 will be held in the desired position by the pawl H and the ratchet 9 I also provide a thumblink L, by means of which the chain may be lengthened or shortened as desired, and it will thus, be seen that I provide a simple and effective fastening device for the purpose herein specified and one which is also comparatively inexpensive and which may be connected with any form of door-frame.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
It will also be apparent that my improved fastening device may be used in connection with bulkheads, or with the covers or doors of port-holes in ships, and for many other and similar purposes.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fastening device for doors, and hinged Windows comprising a chain or similar article, having clamps connected with each end thereof, an oblong plate or link therein, a shaft rigidly connected with said plate or link, and passing therethrough, and a plate connected with the inner end of said shaft, 4
and adapted to bear against the door, or window, said shaft being provided with a ratchet and a properly-supported pawl operating in connection therewith, substantially as shown and described.
2. A fastening device for doors, hinged windows, bulkheads, and the doors of port holes comprising a chain having clamps at each end thereof which are adapted to be connected with the opposite sides of the frame of the door, and means connected with said chain for bearing on the door, substantially as shown and described.
3. A fastening device for doors, comprising a chain having clamps ateach end thereof, which, are adapted to be connected with the opposite sides of the frame of the door, and
means connectedwith said chain for bearing presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this on the door, also for contracting the chain, 26th day of March, 1896.
said chain being also provided with a thumb- 1 1 link by which it may be shortened, substan- MILDOREM WILLIAM GREEK 5 tiaily as shown and described. YVit-nesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as BENJ. FRED. HALL, my invention I have signed my name, in GILBERT G. XVIGLE.
