SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,926, dated March 16, 1897.

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN K. Hroxox, of New Haven, in the county of NewI-Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part ofthis specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, the object being to combine the ease of a cut-away hip with the rigidity and strength of a full-hip corset, at the same time avoiding the possibility of the breaking of the stiffening-stays at the waist-line.

A further object is to reinforce the elastic gore-section, which is commonly placed at the hip in this class of corsets; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.

A represents the upper portion of the front section, the lower edge of which curves from the side stay B forward and downward to the busk-strip C, to which itis joined, and to which curved lower edge a stayed corded strip D is united, serving to connect the lower portion E of the front section with the upper portion A. The upper portion A is suitably boned, which bones terminate at the curved strip D, while the lower portion E is itself unstayed. To properly hold this unstayed lower portion in position and give a smooth iit to the corset over the abdomen, I provide an auxiliary stay F, located upon the insideof the corset. This auxiliary stay is substantially triangular in form, the hypotenuse a of the triangle being attached to the bush-section and its base b secured to the lower edge of the portion E by the usual bindingstrip G, the perpendicular c of the triangle being left free and unattached. This auxilary stay is provided with a series of bones which extend parallel with the perpendicular edge c. The upper angle of the triangle extends above the waist-line and diagonally crosses the vertical stays of Serial No. 602,227. (No model.)

the section A, thus furnishing two bone-sections at angles to each other at about the waistdine.

To provide for the lateral expansion of the corset over the hips, a gore I-I, of elasticV material, is inserted over the rear end of the portion E, than which it is somewhat narrower, and so that said rear portion is held contracted. This elastic gore is united at one edge to the side stay B and at its forward edge to a short stay I, which extends from the lower edge of the curved section D downward to the lower edge of the corset, thus providing an additional stay at the hip-section.

It will thus be seen that with a corset thus constructed one secures the freedom of a cutaway-hip corset and also the advantages of a full-hip corset, and at the same time avoids the possible breaking of steels at the waistline, which is common in full-hip corsets, as the vertical stays in the upper front section terminate just below the waist-line and those ofthe auxiliary stay just above that line.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The herein-described corset having a triangular-boned auxiliary section secured at its front edge to the front edge of the inner face of the corset proper, and at its lower edge to the lower edge of the corset proper, between which lines of attachment said section is free from the body of the corset, the bones of the said section extending parallel with the free edge thereof, substantially as described.

2. The herein-described corset, having a front section and a side stay, said front section comprising an upper boned portion and a lower unboned portion connected by a curved strip extending forward and downward from the said side stay, and an auxiliary boned stay extending from the forward edge of the corset rearward and downward over its inner face to the lower edge thereof, and so that the bones of the auxiliary stay cross the bones ofthe front section an gularly at substantially the waist-line, substantially as described.

3.
