KNIFE-SHARPENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,440, dated March 9, 1897.

Be it known that I, ELIE BEAUDIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do declare the f ollowingto be a full, clear, and eXactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled iu the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in knife-sharpeners; and it has for its object the production of a simple and efficient device of this kind which will quickly sharpen a knife or the like without injuring the same in any-manner.

In carrying out my invention I provide a support or standard which may be conveniently secured to a'table, counter, or the like, and which is provided with supporting-arms in which are mounted files or the like, between which the knife-blade is designed to be passed, said files being adjustable to compensate for wear.

The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved knife- Sharpener. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line 4 4, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a standard or support, which is made up of a base d and supporting-legs d', which are provided with holes or openings CL2, through which securing-screws or the like may be passed, whereby said standard or support may be rigidly secured to a table, count-er, or other similar object. v

Extending from .base a are four arms B, which are convexed on their inner surfaces?) and provided with overhanging ends h of approximate hook form. The arms B are designed to support between them the iiles C, which are used to sharpen the knife or other similar tool. These files are provided with outer flattened sides h2, which are adapted to lit or rest against the convexed faces of said arms B, while the inner faces of said files are convexed, as at b3. The files C rest upon approximately inverted-V-shaped portions D of base ce, their upper kedges fitting under the hook-like ends b of arms B. Said files are held rigidly in position with their convex faces against each other by means of set-screws d, Working in arms B.

In practice, when it is desired to sharpen a knife or other similar tool the same is passed once or twice between the convex faces of files C, whereupon the same Will be quickly sharpened. If the filesv should become worn, the set-screws d are loosened and the files moved, so that a portion of their conveXed faces which has not yet been acted upon may be presented to act on the knife. This adjustment is easily accomplished by reason of the convex faces of arms B.

The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it apit Win be also understood that While I have Y described my improved Sharpener as employing the files C, yet, if desired, removable sections of similar shape covered with emerypaper or other similar substance may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim as my invention- 1. The herein described knife sharpener, comprising a standard or support, arms eX- tending from said standard or support and provided with inner convexed faces, and files adapted to rest against said conveXed faces,

shaped extensions, arms extending from said standard or support adjacent said extensions and having inner convex faees, and files adjustabiy mounted between said arms and having outer fiat sides adapted to rest against the convex faces of said arms and provided with inner convex faces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
