Description

0. M. OURRIER. Whetstone-Holder.
No. 220,914. Patented Oct. 28,1879.
vlmww W111? WQQWQT ATTOR N EYS NAPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASMINGTON D C UNITED-STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. CURRIER, OF INDEPENDENCE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHETSTONE-HOLD ERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,914, dated October 28, 1879; application filed March 13, 1879.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. CURRIER, of Independence, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined VVhetstone and I-Iandle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.-
My invention relates to a device for sharpening blades; and it consists of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter described an d claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents, in side elevation, a device constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical transverse section of the same.
A is a holder, which may be constructed also to act as a handle to operate the whetstone or other grinder B. The holder A may be constructed from any material, preferably, however, from wood.
As before stated, 13' is a whetstone or any other suitable grinder, made in any desired length or form of cross-section. This grinder Bis longitudinally pivoted and attached to the frame or holder A by means of two adjustable centers, C C, provided with thumbscrews C, whereby the stone B and its pivotal bearings may be adjusted at pleasure, so that the stone or grinder B may be revolved to present any desired grinding-surface, and be there rigidly fixed by the tightening of the thumb-screws C or, if desired, in special instances, where a rigid adjustment of the stone B is not desired, its bearings or centers may be dropped fromthe handle, so as. to permit the stone freely torevolve and adjust itself to any irregularities of surface or unsteady movements of the operator.
My device presents, among manyadvautages over any others of which I am aware, first, ex treme simplicity and cheapness of construc= tion; second, lightness and sufficient strength; 1
third, the ease and quickness with which a new stone or grinder can be made to replace one broken or worn out; fourth, the readiness with which stones or grinders of indefinite variety of forms caube adjusted and used.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with the holder and the whetstone, of the two pivotalbearings, which work in holes made in the ends of the stone, said bearings being, respectively, provided with shanks formed angular to their pivotal portions, and which are adjustably secured to the holder, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the holder formed with a recess, in which a longitudinal portion of the whetstone fits, of the two pivotal bearings, which engage, respectively, with holes formed in the whetstone ends, the shanks of said bearings being angular to their pivotal portions and fastened to the holder, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the holder having a longitudinal recess, in which a portion of the whetstone fits, of the bearings, which engage with holes in the ends of the stone, and whose shanks are bent at right angles to their pivotal portions, said shanks passing through holes in the holder and provided with clampnuts, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES M. CURRIER.
Witnesses:
