Description

JAMES F. GILLILAND, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE ADRIAN BOX COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
HINGE.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,652, dated February 23, 1897.
' Application filed June 5, 1896. Serial No. 594,415. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. GILLILAND, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improvement in hinges, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a box fitted with my hinge. Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of the two parts which form the hinge, and Fig. 4c is a detached section of the hinge similar to Fig. 1.
In the manufacture of hinges for small boxes it is desirable to have the hinge cheaper than the usual form of leaf-and-pintle con struction, and also to have it capable of simpler and stronger attachment to the thin walls of the box and cover than the ordinary hinge, and these desirable features I have attained by my invention.
A represents a box, and B a cover hinged thereto.
In forming the stationary part of the hinge I take a sheet-metal blank in the form shown in Fig. 2 and punch in it two holes G and H. The superfluous metal in these holes may be either punched out clean or may be bent inward, as shown at g. I then bend the blank, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, so that its ends F and I will come, respectively, on theinside and outside of the box and secure it to the box by a rivet R. The moving part of the hinge Imake of a blank D, Fig. 3, giving it the right-angle bend K and a curved bend O, which curved bend is adapted to pass through the openings G and H in the stationary part of the hinge, thus making the metal between the holes G and H serve as a pintle. The ends E C embrace the sides of the cover B and are secured thereto and to each other by a rivet R. These hinges can be made out of sheet metal very rapidly. The two parts are readily slipped together and when put together are readily slipped in place on the box A and cover B and riveted, forming a very strong, serviceable, cheap, and light hinge.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A sheet-metal hinge, comprising two U- shaped leaves adapted to embrace the edges of the top and bottom of a box,one of said leaves being provided at itscenter and on one side with slots, and the other leaf provided at one edge with a curved portion passing through the said .slots, substantially as described.
2. A sheet-metal hinge, comprising two U- shaped leaves adapted to embrace the edges of the top and bottom of a box, one of said leaves being provided at its center and on one side with slots and having an inwardly-bent JAMES F. GILLILAND.
