TRUNK HINGE-TR'IMMNG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application led February 20, 1915. Serial No. 9,566. i
To all u1/wm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY W'HEARY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful improvements in Trunk Hinge- '.irimmings, of which the following is a description, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, whic are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trunk hinge trimmings more particularly ada ted for use with wardrobe trunks. Y
any of the wardrobe trunks now on the market rest upon one end and are divided vertically medially into two hinged together sections, the lupper ends of which are open and provided with a hinged end top cover. 4In the particular trunk shown the top cover is formed in two parts which are hinged to-` gether. These end covers have heretofore been secured to the sections by separate hinges and locking fixtures. As thus secured, the connections in many ways lack the strength and rigidity desired in the manufacture of trunks.
lt is one of the objects of the present in` vcntion to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and combine the top and side hinge portions with the adjacent trunk trimmings, and thereby provide a hinge trimming which possesses greater strength and rigidity than the same parts used independently.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk hinge fixture which is adapt ed to bind the adjacent sections and cover of a trunk of the before mentioned type in order to resist torsional strains or working of the parts with relation to each other, and to bind the parts when in closed position, into a rigid structure. f
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk hinge trimming which is so constructed as to automatically lock the trunk sections together when the top cover -is in closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk hinge trimming which is of very simple construction, is well adapted for the purpose desired and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view the inventionconsist's of the improved trunk hinge trimming and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure 1 is a rear view of a wardrobe trunk provided with the improved hinge trimming, the trunk being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the hinge trimming shown in open position, portions broken away to show interior construction. Fig. 3 is a top view of the hinge trimming; and Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof. L
Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates the body section, 9 the wardrobe section hinged thereto alongside its rear vertical edge and 10 the top cover which extends over the upper ends of both sections and is hinged to the body section of the trunk. The top cover 10 is divided medially into two sections 11 and 12 on a line co incident with the line of division of the trunk sections and the improved hinged trimming 13 is adapted to connect the two covers and the two trunk sections together. The trimming is in four parts and comprises the body section portion 14, the ward robe section portion 15, the top cover inner section 16 and the top cover outer section 17, which are attached respectively to the body section, the wardrobe section and the top cover inner and outer sections of said trunk. The fixture is stamped from sheet metal and whenasembled is approximately of rectangular shape and is bent'transversely medially of its length into L-shape to form the upper portion 18 and the side portion 19. While the transverse bend is of rounded form as indicated by the numeral 20 to conform to the rounded edge portion of the trunk, it is obvious that the corner may be formed with a right anglebend if desired.
The rectangle piece of material is divided medially, vertically and transversely to form the portions before described. The "adjacent edge portions of the body and wardrobe sections of the trimming are provided with edgewise overlapping eyed portions 2l through which extends a hinge pintle 1nember Q2 to hingedly connect the two parts together. The inner edges of the upper portions of the top cover sections 16 and 17 are also provided with edgewise overlapping eyed portions23. through which extends. a, hinge pintle member 24 tophingedly connect' these parts together.
The side portion 19 of the trimming ljust above the eyed portions 21 is provided with a part circular outwardly embossed rib25,`
the center of which is the point of junction of thefour portions of the trimming, `The rib is of semicircular form in cross section and the lower ends of the jportionsof rib formed on the top cover sections of the trimming f are provided'- with `downwardly 1projecting tongues 26 and 27 whichr enter the recesses 2Sk and 29 formed by the embossed rib portions of thebody and Wardrobe sections ofthe trimming. The opposite end portion of the rib of the inner top cover sectionl is also `provided with af projecting tongue which enters the recess 31 of the outer top cover section 17 ywhen in closed .i position.
It willbe notedthat in view of the short 'f radius 'or' are of'swing of the projecting tongue'27, vwhenonlythefront half ofthe top cover is Yswung toOpen'position, that av v tongue.
Wardly .pas indicated by the numeral 32L at "f their junction with the rib/to form a flush 1 outer surface when the parts are assembled,
`and the tonguef27 is provided with eXtension rib portion25 to ll up the side openin'gv 29 ytol preserve the ornate contour ofthe part circular rib.
" The trimmingv isprovided with perforations33 to receive rivets or other securing .trunk portions. v
means 34 for fastening the trimming to the From the vforegoingl description it will be -seen that the trunk trimming is of :very
'1 simplel construction and combines a plus* y rality'of hinges and locking fitting into one trimming. v
'VVhat I `claim 'as `my invention-is:
- l.. A'trunk hinge trimming,- comprising aL `four-part member having a locking engage- -four-part member having a tongue andl rement with each other, the parts'v being hingedly connected together in pairs.
2. A trunk hinge trimming, comprising a cess engagement with each other,v the parts being hingedly connected together in pairs. 3; A trunk hinge trimming, comprising a All of the tongues are offset in-` four-part member having a tongue and recess engagement with each other, the parts being hingedly connected together in pairs and one of the pairs having portions extend- `ing at an angle `with relation to other portions.
' 4. A trunk hinge trimming, comprising a.
two top cover member hingedly connected together and having portions extending at right angles with relation to other portions, a body portion, and a wardrobe section portion hingedly connected to thebody portion, all of said portions having an edgewise tongue and recess locking engagement Vwith each other.
5.- A trunk hinge trimming, comprising an angular inner top cover member, an angular outer top cover member hingedly con nected thereto, a body portion having an .edgewiseg engagement with the lower edge of the inner top cover member, and a wardrobesk section -v member having an edgewise vengagement Ywith the lower edge of the outer-top cover member and having a hinged connectionwith the body portion,v the adjacent portionsof `said members having a part circular rib embossed outwardly there- .from to form atongue and recess engagementfbetween the four members.
6. AIn combination with a trunk formed of two hinged together sections having open ends covered by a two part top cover which is hinged to one of the sections, a hinged trimming therefor comprising a two part 'hinged together cover member mounted on the two parts of the cover and hingedlyconnecting said cover parts' together, said trimming parts having portions extending downwardly at right angles with relation to other parts, and a two part hinged together member` mounted on both trunk sections and hingedly' connecting saidy sections together, thegtwo parts of the trimming mounted on the cover having a tongue and recess engagement with each other and also having a tongue and recess engagement lwith the two lparts of; the trimming mounted on the trunk sections.
In testimony whereof, I aihx my signature,
--in presence lof two witnesses.
