GEORGE HENRY WHIEARY, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN,
TRUNK-FITTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915..
Application filed April 23, 1914. Serial No. 833,865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon H. WHEARY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Fittings, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification;
This invention relates to improvements in trunk fittings.
Many trunks now on the market are adapted to rest upon one end and are divided vertically, medially of their length into two hinged together sections, the upper end of one of which is provided with a hinged end top cover. These end covers have heretofore been secured to the sections by separate hinges and locking fixtures. As thus secured, the connections in many ways lack the strength and rigidity desirable in the manufacture of trunks.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and combine the end hinge with the side fixture and thereby provide a trunk fixture which possesses greater strength and rigidity than the same fixtures used separately.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk fixture which is adapted to bind the adjacent sections and cover of a trunk of the before mentioned type in order to resist torsional strains or working of the parts with relation to each other, and to bind the parts, when in closed position, into a rigid structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk fitting which is so constructed as to automatically lock the top cover and the side sections together when said parts are swung to closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk fitting which is of very simple construction, is well adapted for the purpose desired and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved trunk fitting and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure l is a side view of the improved trunk fixture shown mounted on a trunk portion, the trunk portion being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a view of the inner side of the fitting; Fig. 8'is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts shown in partly open position; Fig. 4 is an edge view of the fitting; and Fig. 5 is a front view on a smaller scale of a trunk provided with the improved fit ting.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates the body section, 9 the wardrobe section and 10 the end cover of the wardrobe section of a wardrobe trunk of the type for which the improved trunk fitting is particularly adapted for use in connection therewith. The improved fitting 11, attached to the trunk at the point of junction of the two sections and the cover and extending over the upper end portions of the trunk, comprises the upper or cover member 12, the lower or wardrobe section member 13 and the body section member 14 which are attached respectively to the cover portion, the wardrobe section and the body section. The fitting is stamped from sheet metal andwhen assembled is of approximately rectangular shape and is bent transversely, medially of its length into L-shape to form the top portion 15 and the side portion 16. While the transverse bend is of rounded form as indicated by the numeral 17 to conform to the rounded corner of the trunk, it is obvious that the corner may be formed with a right angle bend.
The rectangular piece of material is divided medially, vertically to form the body portion 14 of the fitting and the other half portion is divided horizontally to form the upper end cover member 12 and the wardrobe section member 13. The upper hori zontally extending and abutting edges of the body member and the end cover member are provided with edgewise overlapping eyed portions 18 through which extends a and all equivalents hinge pintle member 19 to hingedly connect the two parts together. The vertically ex-. tending portion of the body member of the fitting at its front edge is provided with forwardly projecting tongues 20 which] are adapted to enter the recesses 21 and 22 of the wardrobe section member and the upper end cover member'of the fitting. The up per end cover member 12 is also provided with a downwardly projecting tongue 23' which enters a recess 24k formed in the ward robe section member.- The recesses of the respective members are formedby emboss-v ing or bulging outwardly a circular portion of the fitting to form a reinforcing annular rib 25 the center of which is'the point of junction of the inner corner edges of the members of the fitting. The projecting tongues are also in circumferential alinement with the annular rib so that when the parts are in closed or locked. position the rib portions of the difierent members will form a circular rib of ornate appearance. In order to provide a smooth exterior surface of the adjacent rib portions the projecting tongues are offset inwardly the thickness of the material the plates are formed of. These offset portions form shoulders 26 which abut against the edges of the rib portions forming the rib recesses,
It will be noted that in View of the-short radius or are of swing of the projecting tongue 23 that a portion. of the rib forming the recess 2A is cut away on its outer side to form a side opening 27 to permit the movement of said tongue, and also in order to preserve the ornate contour of the annular rib the tongue 23 is provided with an ofiset rib portion 28 which corresponds in shape to the part cut away from the recess portion 24.- and when the. parts are in closed position, fills said side opening. The fitting is provided with perforations 29 to receive rivets or other means 30 for securing the fitting to a trunk.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the trunk fitting is of simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described.
