Be it known that I, FRANKLIN SANFORD IVHEELER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to envelops or to the manufacture thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide an envelop which is of novel form and construction and which is adapted for use in sending letters, circulars, and other articles through the mails, and for other and similar purposes, a further object being to construct an envelop from a blank the form of which is such that a great saving of material is accomplished in the making of the envelop or envelops.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which my improved envelop is made; Fig. 2, a similar view showing a part thereof folded; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the blank folded and ready for use; Fig. 4, a section 011 the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form of blank; Fig. 6, a view of the blank shown in Fig. 5, partly folded; Fig. 7, a similar View of an envelop made from the blank shown in Fig. 5, ready for use; Fig. 8, a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modified form of blank; Fig. 9, a back view of an envelop made therefrom; Fig. 10, a view similar to Fig. 1 of another modified form of blank; Fig. 11, a back view of an envelop made therefrom; Fig. 12, a similar view of said envelop sealed; Fig. 13, a cross-section on the line 13 of Fig. 12; Fig. 14, a view similar to Fig. 1 of another modified form of blank; Fig. 15, a back view of an envelop formed therefrom Fig. 16,a similar view of said envelop sealed; Fig. 17, a view similar to Fig 1 of another modified form of blank; Fig. 18, a back view of an envelop made therefrom, and Fig. 19 a similar view of said envelop sealed.
In the practice of my invention I cut from a sheet of paper of any desired size, kind, quality, or class the blank shown in Fig. 1. which consists of a body portion A, havinga folding end B of the same length and of almost the same width, and said body portion A is provided with a narrow folding side C, which is gummed on its inner side, and with a flap D. The end B is also provided with a folding extension or end piece E, which is gummed on its outer side, as shown in Fig. 2, and said end piece is also provided at its upper side with a flap G, which is of the same length as the end piece, and formed at each end thereof are inwardly-directed slits g, and
.said flap G is adapted to be folded inwardly along the dotted line g and then outwardly along the dotted line g and that part of the flap which is foldedxoutwardly is gummed on its outer surface, as shown in Fig. 3.
In forming the envelop the flap G is folded as above described and into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, after which the end piece or extension E of the folding end B is folded inwardly, as is also shown in Fig. 2, and said folding end is then folded over the body portion along the dotted line F and the end piece E is sealed to the body portion, after which the side C is folded over and sealed to the end B, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The envelop is then ready for use, and Fig. 3 is a back view thereof.
When it is desired to seal the envelop, the flap D is folded over the gummed portion of the flap G and sealed thereto and the outer edge of the flap D abuts against the side of the end B and said flap entirely covers the gummed portion of the flap G, and the method of folding the flap D is clearly shown in Fig. 4, and said flap D is flush with the end B, which constitutes the back of the envelop when the envelop is sealed.
In Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, I have shown a modified form of construction in which the blank consists of the body portion A, having triangular folding sides H and h, a flap h and a folding end piece h and the side H is provided at its widest end with a flap k and the inner end thereof is separated from the main portion of the side by an outwardlydirected slit it and this flap h is adapted to be folded inwardly on the dotted line it and then folded outwardly on the dotted line 7K in the same manner as the flap D in the construction shown in Fig. 1.
In forming the envelop from the blank shown in Fig. 5 the side 11 is folded over the body portion A, as shown in Fig. 6, and the flap h is folded inwardly and then outwardly along'the dotted lines 0 and 7 and the outer side of the flap h is guinmed, as is also shown in Fig. 6. The outer edge of the folding side his also gummed, as shown in said figure, and said side h is folded over the side H and sealed thereto, after which the folding end piece 7L3, which is gummed on its inner surface, is folded over and sealed to the side h and the letter or other article is inserted at the end of the envelop, and when it is desired to seal the same the flap 72. is folded over and sealed to the gumrned surface of the flap h and the edge of said flap 7L2 abuts against the end of the side 11 and the outer surfaces of said fiapand said side are flush.
In Figs. 8 and 9, I have shown another modified form of construction in which the body portion A of the blank is provided with folding end pieces a, which are gumrned on the outer surfaces, as shown at a and said body portion is provided with a folding side K and a folding flap 7c, and the folding side K is providedwith an extension kiwhich isadapted to be folded inwardly along the dotted line and then outwardly along the dotted line 70 and the extension 70 is gu nmed on its outer surface, asshown in Fig. 9, and in forming an envelop from this blank the end pieces a are first folded inwardly over the body portion, after which the side K is folded over and sealed to said end pieces. Before folding the side K and sealing it to the end pieces the extension 7.; is folded inwardly along the dotted line k and then outwardly along the dotted line 70 and the appearance of these parts when the envelop is ready for use is shown in Fig. 9, and when it isdesired to seal the envelop the flap 7c-of the body portion A is folded over and sealed to the gumtned surface of the extension 7c and in this position of the parts the outer side of the flap It will be flush with the outer side of the folded side K, the outer edge of the flap 7c abutting against the edge of the said side K.
In Figs. 10 to 13, inclusive, I have shown another modified form of construction, which is somewhat similar to the construction shown inFigs. 5 to 7, inclusive, and in which the body portion A is provided with two triangular side pieces H and h, a flap h", and the folding end piece 7L and the widest end of the side h, which is directed upwardly, is .cut out, as shown by the dotted line h so as to correspond with the form of the flap 71, and sealed to the upper end of said side h is a cross-piece h, the upper side of which is cut out so as. to correspond in shapewith the upper end of the side h, to which it is sealed, and the upper side of said cross-piece h projects above the side 72 and is gumnied on its outer surface, as shown in Fig. 11. The outer edge of the side H is gummed on its inner surface, as shown in Fig. 2, as is also the folding end piece 77?, and in forming the envelop the side his folded over the body portion, after which the side H is folded over and sealed to said side 72/. and secured to the side H, and the flap h is then folded over and sealed to the gurnmed surface of the cross-strip h, which projects above the side h, to which it is sealed, and when the flap h is sealed to the cross-piece h, as described, the outer surface of said flap and the outer surface of the side 72 will be flush, as hereinbefore described.
The form of construction shown in Figs. 14 to 16, inclusive, is similar to that shown in Figs. 8 and 9; but in this form of construction the end pieces a are circular in form and each is gummed on its inner surface, and the folding side piece K is segmental or circular in form at its. edge. At its outer edge and sealed thereto is a segmental strip 70 which projects beyond the edge of the side K, and the projecting portion of which is guinmed on its outer side, as. shown in Fig. 15,, andin forming the envelop from thisblank the side K is first folded over the body portion, after which the ends a are folded over and sealed thereto, and the flap k, which is also circular in form, is then folded over and sealed to the projecting portion of the strip 70 and when surface of the flap 70 will be flush with the outer surface of the flap K, the-edges of said parts abutting, as shown in Fig. 16.
The construction shown in Figs. 17, to 19, inclusive, is still more similar tothat shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the only difference being that in this form of construction the folding ends CL are each guinmed on their inner surfaces, and in forming the envelop the folding side K is first folded over the body portion, after which the ends a are folded over and sealed thereto. In this form of construction the side K, is also provided with theextension M, which is adapted to be folded inwardly on the dotted line 70 and then outwardly on the dotted line 70*, and this is done before the side is folded, over and the ends a sealed is sealed to the extension W, as .hereinbefore describedwith reference to the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An envelop composed of a blank which is cut into the proper form, said blank being composed of a body portion, and parts which are adapted to be folded thereover to form the back, said parts being adapted to be sealed together, and said back being provided with a part which is gummed on its outer side and to which the flap may be sealed,,in such manner that the edge of the flap will abut against the edge of the back, and be flush therewith,

2. An envelop composed of a blank, and consisting of a body portion, and folding parts which are adapted to be folded thereover, and sealed together so as to form the back of the envelop, said body portion being also provided with a flap and said back with a part which is formed thereon, or secured thereto, and to which the flap is adapted to be sealed in such manner that when the envelop is sealed the flap will be flush with the back, substantially as shown and described.
3. An envelop composed of a blank, which I consists of a body portion having a folding side, and folding end pieces, and a flap, said side being provided with an extension which is adapted to be folded inwardly, and then outwardly, and said extension being gummed on its outer surface, and said ends being gummed on their inner surfaces, substantially as shown and described.
4;; An envelop composed of ablank, consisting of a body portion having folding sides, a folding end portion, and an end flap, said sides being triangular in form and the wider ends thereof being in opposite directions, one of said sides being gummed on its inner surface, and adapted to be sealed to the other side, and said folding end being adapted to be folded over said sides, and to be sealed thereto, and one of said sides being also provided with an extension which is adapted to be folded inwardly and then outwardly, and
