CHARLES L. BENEDICT,
OF AMHERST, CANADA.
HAN D-STAMP HQLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.576,336, dated February 2, 189'?. Application filed March 2,1896. Renewed December 17,1896. Serial No. 616,095. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may conceive:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs L. BENEDICT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Amherst, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamp IIolders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings, Figure l represents a front view of a series of handstamp holders embodying my invention, show-i ing some in use and one in folded position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of said holders. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
In the drawings, A represents the vertical card-retaining device, consisting in this instance of a vertically-disposed plate A, which is provided with the lateral retaining-iianges ct ct to hold an indicator-card B, as shown, which is slipped down under said flanges. At its bottom edge this plate is provided with eyes or bearing portions a a", which are engaged by the rear bar c of the supportingframe C. This frame is formed, preferably, of wire or other spring material and consists of the rear cross-bar c and the forwardly-extending arms c c', the forward ends of which are bent inwardly and provided with rearwardly-extending portions c2 c2 in semicircular form as to embrace the handle portion or stem of a hand-stamp. The parts c2 c2 preferably have their ends overlapping each other, as shown in the drawings, and the end por tions of the arms c c approach each other, so as to leave but a small space between them. This construction forms a circular support to receive the handle of a stamp, the narrowed portion of the handle being forced between the spring-arms c c of the holder, which yield to admit the same.
In order to secure the device to a wall, desk,
' or other suitable support, I provide a supporting device, in this instance a screw-eye D, which engages the cross-bar c of the supporting-frame and has its screw-threaded portion in position to be screwed into a suitable vertical support. I may, however, attach the device in other ways.
, In order to maintain the supporting-frame C in a horizontal position, I may secure the supporting device or screw-eye D rigidly to the rear cross-bar c by means of solder or otherwise, as indicated in Fig. 3, or I may employ the construction shown in Fig. 2, in which the lower edge of the card-retaining device or plate A is provided with a pair of outwardly extending horizontal arms or brackets a2 a2, which engage the under side of the arms c c of the supporting-frame at a little distance from the cross-bar a and hold said arms in a horizontal position.
It will be seen that as the cross-bar c of the holder C engages bearings on the plate A a hinge connection is formed, so that the holder can be folded up against the plate A. This is often a convenience in use, and it is a great advantage in packing the devices for shipment in quantities or singly. In use one or more of the devices are attached to a suitable support by screwing in the threaded stem of the screw-eye D. If several are used, they will be arranged, ordinarily, in a horizontal row. Each device will be provided with a blank indicator-card B of a size to fit within `the flanges a a of plate A, and the user will impress upon each card the stamp which he wishes to hang on that particular holder, thus forming a simple and effective index, asindicated in Fig. l. p
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A holder for hand-stamps comprising among its members, a plate provided with projecting supportin g-shoulders, and a stamp-v holding frame hinged to'said plate and adapted to engage and be supported by said shoulders, said frame having forwardlyextending arms provided with inwardly extending spring portions adapted to engage the stem of a hand-stamp, substantially as described.
2. A holder for hand-stamps comprising among its members, a supporting device, a stamp-supporting frame secured thereto and ICO ing inwardly-extending curved ends7 for engaging the stein of a hand-stamp, of L plate hinged to said stamp-supporting device and provided with Card-retaining flanges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afix iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. BENEDICT.
