BO-X.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 575,399, dated January 19, 1897.
Application filed MEN}! 2 7, l 8 96.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WLADYsLAUs J ESOHKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to combination workcases such as are usually employed by ladies for holding needles, threads, thimbles, scissors, embroidery-needles, and other and similar articles, and also to holders for manicure sets, cigars, and other articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and which is also very convenient, while being comparatively inexpensive, a further object being to provide a device of this class which may be made very or namental and which is adapted to serve as a table ornament.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form part, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my i1nproved work-case; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof with the cap or cover removed; Fig. 3, a perspective view of my improved device when used as a cigar-holder, and Fig. 4 a similar view showing the same adapted for use as a receptacle for a manicure set.
In the practice of my invention, reference being made to Fig. 1, I provide a work-case which consists of abaseA,which may be made of any desired form and which may be cov' ered with leather and ornamented to any desired extent, and at the center thereof is arranged a cushion B, which is preferably rectangular in form and also preferably square, and at each side of said cushion is hinged or flexibly secured a plate D, which may be composed of pasteboard, cardboard, or any desired material, and these plates D are united by triangular corner-pieces E, which are composed of satin, silk, or similar material, and the plates D are also covered on their inner sides with similar material to that which Serial No. 585,047. (No model.)
forms the triangular corner-pieces E, and said triangular corner-pieces and the cover for the plates D may be composed of a single piece, if desired.
Part of the plates F are provided on their upper or inner surfaces with transverse strips (1, which may be composed of leather, silk, satin, or any preferred material and which are provided with loops or pockets 01 which are adapted to serve as means for holding thimbles,scissors,crochet-needles, knives, and other articles, and one of said plates is also provided on its inner surface or face with a needle-holder G, and the cushion B at the center is adapted to serve for the purpose of holding pins and other and similar articles.
The plates D may be folded together or upwardly and inwardly, and in this operation the corners E fold between the plates, D, as shown in Fig. l; and I also provide a cap or cover II, which is provided with a hollow square body portion, which is adapted to inclose the plates D when folded together or to be inserted over the same, as shown in Fig. 1, and may be of any desired form, but which, as shown in the drawings, is pyramidal in form and provided with a knob or ball 71 which is adapted to serve as a handle.
The cap or cover His preferably composed of the same material as the base A, or said base A and said cap may be covered with the same material, and any kind of leather or silk or satin may be employed for this purpose.
In Fig. 3 I have shown my improved device applied for use as a cigar-holder, and in this form of construction I substitute for the central cushion a box or receptacle B, which is designed to receive cigars, and the side plates D are adapted to be folded adjacent thereto and to inclose the same, after which the cap or cover II is placed thereover, as hereinbefore described.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the same applied for use as a receptacle or holder for a manicure set, in which the strips cl are employed for holding various articles used for this purpose, and in this form of construction I substitute for the central cushion a puff-box, as shown at B, which is provided with a removable cover I), and, as will be understood, said plates D are in this form also adapted to be folded upwardly, so as to inclose said puff-box, in which position the cap or cover H may be placed therein.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and, as hereinbefore stated, it may be made as ornamental as desired.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A box or receptacle of the class herein described, comprising a base, a plurality of pivoted or hinged plates connected with the top thereof, and adapted to be folded together so as to inclose a space designed to receive various articles, said plates being connected by flexible corner-pieces, and a cap or cover which is adapted to be placed thereover, when the plates are folded, substantially as shown and'described.
2. A work-case, comprising a bottom, or base, having a central cushion formed thereon, which is rectangular in form, side plates hinged to, or flexibly connected therewith, at the base of said cushion, and adapted to be folded by flexible corner-pieces, and a removable cap or cover, which is adapted to be placed over said side plates, when so folded, substantially as shown and described.
3. A work-case, comprising a bottom, or base, having a central cushion formed thereon, which is rectangular in form, side plates hinged to, or flexibly connected therewith, at the base of said cushion, and adapted to be folded upwardly, said side plates being connected by flexible corner-pieces, and a removable cap or cover, which is adapted to be placed over said side plates, when so folded, and each of said side plates being provided with means for holding various articles, such as scissors, thimbles, needles, and the like, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as inyinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 26th day of March, 1896.
