SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,876, dated January 12, 1897.

To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BLAs1Us,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Union, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks or Fastening Devices for Vindow-Sashes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to window-locks, or to fastening devices for the sashes thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide an effective device of this class by means of which the upper and lower sashes may be locked together, a further object being to provide such a device which is simple in construction and operation .and comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is plan view of myimproved lock or fastening device, showing the same connected with the upper and lower sashes; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, showing a portion of the upper and lower sashes in section; Fig. 3, a plan view of that part of the lock which is connected with the lower sash, the top plate being removed; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a plan view of a modiiied form of my improved lock; Fig. 6, asection thereof on the line 6 6, and Fig. 7 aside view of that part of thelock or fastening device which is connected with the upper sash.
In the practice of my invention I provide a lock or fastening device which consists of two parts, one of which is connected with the lower cross-barA of the upper sash and the other with the upper cross-bar of the lower sash.
That part of the fastening device which is secured to or connected with the upper sash is shown in plan view in Fig. l and in side View in Fig. 7, and consists of a plate B, on g which is formed a central upwardly-directed portion b, at the sides of which are formed notches or recesses b2, and in the top of which is formed a transverse slot h3.
That part of the lock which is connected with the lower sash consists of a plate D, with which are connected two pivoted levers d, which are pivoted at cl2, and between which is placed a yoke-sprin g E, the ends of which bear against the outer endsof said levers, and the inner ends of said levers are adapted to enter the notches or recesses b2 and that part of the lock which is secured to the upper sash.
A cross-bar d3 is secured to the plate D between the inner ends of the levers d, so as to prevent the same from coming too close together, and between the outer ends of said levers dis a cross-head G, the ends of which are inclined in opposite directions and are adapted to abut against the inclined shoulders or projections g, formed on the levers d, and passing through the cross-head G is a bolt or shaft H, the upper end of which is provided with a cross-head or yoke h, and that part of the bolt or shaft which passes through the cross-head G is square or manysid edin form, and over the levers d, the crosshead G, and the spring E is placed a top plate K, which is held in place by screws 7c, which form the pivotal connection of the levers d,
'and the outer ends of said levers are provided with outwardly-directed arms M, which are provided with heads m, and the inner end of the top plate or cover K is provided centrally with a vertical shoulder or extension O, which is formed thereon or secured thereto, and on the outer end of which is formed a projection O2, which is adapt-ed to enter the transverse slot b3 in the part secured to the upper sash, and the form of this shoulder or projection O2 and the transverse slot b3 is such as to make a tongue-and-groove connection, whereby the sashes are drawn together and the rattling thereof prevented.
The top plate or cover K is provided near its inner end with a depending shoulder or projection k3, in the lower end of which is formed a groove which incloses the crosshead of the yoke-spring E, as shown in Fig. 4, whereby said springis held in position, and the operation of this form of construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In order to disconnect the sashes, it is only necessary to turn the cross-head G by means IOO of the handle h of the shaft H and to press inwardly on the heads m of the arms M, and this operation forces inwardly the outer ends of the levers d and forces outwardly the inner ends thereof, whereby they are disconnected from the plate B, which is secured to the upper sash, and the lower sash may then be raised and the upper sash lowered if desired, and by reversing this operation said sashes may be again locked together.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the shoulder or project-ion O2 on the top plate or cover K is of the forni in longitudinal sec-..`
tion shown in Fig. G, and the plate or part B, which is secured to the upper sash, is provided with an upwardly-directed shoulder or projection P, the inner side of which is inclined, and the outer side of the shoulder or projection O is similarly inclined, and by means of this arrangement, when the sashes are locked together by the levers CZ, they are also drawn together laterally by the shoulders or projections O2 and P, and the operation of this form of construction will be substantially the same as that hereinbefore described.
It will thus be seen that I provide a locking device for the sashes of windows which is simple in construction and operation and which is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may bc made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiieing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A lock or fastening device for windowsashes, which is composed of two parts, one of which is adapted to be sec ured to the upper sash, andthe other to the lower sash, that part which is adapted to be secured to the upper sash being provided with notches or recesses inthe sides thereof, and with adovetailed cross-groove in the top thereof, and that part which is adapted to be secured to the lower sash being provided with springoperated levers which are adapted to enter said notches or recesses, and said part being also provided with a shoulder or projection which is adapted to enter the said dovetailed groove, and with means for operating said levers, substantially as shown and dcscribed.
