VIMPROVED LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,460, dated August 28, 1866.

To all whom tt may concern.:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. BARNARD, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Cleaner for Lamp-Chimneys, Jars, Bottles, 850,; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, thrilling a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view, in perspective, of my improved cleaner inV its simplest form inserted/ in a lamp-chimney; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the same at its hinge, showing the position and arrangement of the spring combined therewith Fig. 3, a transverse sec- Ifion through one of the cleaningpads in the line zz of Fig. 1, showing its peculiar corrugated form; Figs. 4 and 5, longitudinal sections at the joints of such forms of my improved cleaners as have bot-h arms pivoted, showing the several modes of combining spri n there with.

The nature of my invention consists in the manufacture of a lam pchimney cleaner having one or two arms pivoted to a handle, said arms being kept open and apart by means of springs interposed between them, or between the arm and handle, or bearing outwardly upon them below their pivot, as seen in Fig. 5.

The cheapest, simplest form of my invention is that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

I take a simple stick or strip, A, hinge thereto one end ot' an arm, B, by means of a small metallic plate, C, Fig. 2, which passes into slots cut both in the strip A and th-e end of the arm B, and is pivoted to each by means of pins ct a passing transversely across said slots and through the ends of theplate, as seen in Fig. 2, and insert a spiral spring, D, in recesses cut in the opposite faces of said arm B and strip A above the hinge C. This spring I) forces apart the strip and arm with their attached pads until short projecting end of the arm B below the hinge C strikes and bears against the face ot' the strip.

The pads E E, attached to the ends of the arm and strip, or of the two arms illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, are constructed of narrow pieces of very thin metal, made plane or corrugated lengthwise to give them the necessary stiffness with the smallest weight of metal, and padded or lined with cloth, felt, wool, or other soft cleansingsubstance. These pads are tltted with central side ears projecting upward to embrace the ends of the arms, and form bearings for the pivot-pins by means of which they are hinged or swung thereto.

In Fig. 4 I have illustrated my improved cleaner as constructed with two arms, B B',

pivoted to a handle, A', one on each side of l its upper end, said arms heilig kept apart by means of a spiral spring, D, inserted between them above the same, and limited in their play by the form and length of the ends ot' said arms b b below their pivots. Pads are hinged to the outer ends of the arms, as hereinbefore described.

I contemplate substituting for aspiral spring, l), interposed between the arms B B', two dat side springs, K K, having one end ot' each secured to the side of the handle below t-he arms, and the other bearing and pressing against the lower end of each arm below its hinge, all as fully illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

My improved cleaner presents the advantages ot1 great simplicity in construction and efficiency in use, and can be more cheaply manufactured than any other known to me.

Having thus fully described my improved instrument for cleaning lampchimneys, &c., I claiml. As a new article of manufacture, a lampchimney cleaner having one or more arms, B B', hinged toa handle, A, and so combined with a spring, D, as herein described,so placed above the hinge or hinges as to force said arms outwardly, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
