Description

UNITED STATES HENRY J. ASTHALTER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,227, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY J AsTHALTER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bill-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows my improvement in perspective, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through x a', Fig. l.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The plate a, of any suitable form, is made to be hung up or affixed to a desk, rtable, or to a suitable pedestal by nail or screw-holes a. At one end is hinged a swinging-bar, b, and at or near the opposite ends of both is alixed, to one a curved stem, c, and to the other a like stem, c, in such relative position that they will slide on or against each other, and when extended come as near as may be, point to point. A spring, d, connects the plate a and bar b between the stems cv c and hinging point e, so as to bring them back after being distended and hold them in that position. In consequence of the stems c c sliding on or against each other, but one hole Will Vbe made inthe bills or other papers filed thereon to lle the papers. The arm or bar b is raised till the points of the stems c c are open, when the bill is placed on either, and the arm b is allowed to come back. Any one of a number of bills or papers can then be removed by so separating them that on raising the bar b all above the one to be removed will be on the upper stem c', and the rest on the lower stem c and in like manner it can be replaced in its file order.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bill and paper-le, consisting of a swingingbar, b, hinged at one end to a plate, a, in combination with a spring, d, and stems c c', which overlap or slide past each other, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I, the said HENRY J. AsTHALTEE, have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY J. ASTHALTER.
