Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G. SEITZINGER, OF OTTAWA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN ARMSTRONG, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN GRAIN-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,445, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, G. SEITZINGER, of 0t tawa, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gate for Discharging Grain, 830., from \Vagons and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of the grain-gate Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the plane of the line .00 ac, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an easy means for discharging grain from a grain-wagon; and it consists in the employment of a gate suitably hinged in a frame, which latter is to be placed in a hole or opening made in the bottom of the wagon, and to have applied to it suitable mechanism. for opening and closing the same, as will be presently described.
A A designate the frame which carries the gate B. This frame is suitably secured in an opening made in the bottom of the wagon, as shown in Fig. 3, the sides A being bolted to the bottom of the wagon, and the vertical parts A protruding through the opening in such manner as to bring the top and face of the gate flush, or nearly so, with the bottom of the wagon.
O is a rod, which is secured by eyes a or the like, that will permit it to turn to the bottom of the frame A, its ends protruding out at either side of the wagon, so as to be handy for operating the gate 13. The gate B carries two hooked-shaped hinges, O G, which overlap the rod 0 in such manner that the gate can be quickly removed from its frame when it is desired so to do.
The rod 0 is bent at its middle in a direction at right angles to its length, and this bent part, which Idenominate a catch and designate by the letter I), protrudes through a slot cut in the front edge of the gate B, and, in conjunction with a suitably-made slot or holes, d 0, made in the frame, serves as a catcht-hat is to say, it is permitted to sink for a certain distance in a recess, 11, out in the edge of the frame, when, by a longitudinal thrust in one direction given to it by a spring, E, suitably applied for the purpose, it slides in a groove, 0, in the frame, and thus keeps the gate from being accidentally opened.
Two supporters, F F, are employed, one at each side of the wagon-box, which serve as supporters and guides to the rod 0.
To open the gate it is merely necessary to draw up on one end of the rod or to push upon the other, according as to which side of the wagon the operator is, when the end of the catch 1) will be released and the gate will fall down or open of its own gravity. To close it, it is merely necessary to turn or twist the rod 0 in the proper direction, so that the gate can be raised up or shut. It is, locked by crowding the catch b into the recess or groove provided for the purpose.
This is a very simple gate and works perfectly in every respect, and does not in the least injure the wagon for other purposes than as a grain-wagon.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the catch 1) of the rod 0 and gate B with the recesses d e of the frame A, and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
G. SEITZIN GER.
Witnesses JOHN ARMSTRONG, O. LEAVENS.
