HAIR PIN.
' No. 574,288. Patented Dec. 29. 1896.
Attorney;
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH V. TIMMONS, OFVOLALLAM, XVASHINGTON.
HAIR-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,288, dated December 29, 1896.
Application filed August 6, 1896.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WARD TIMMoNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clallam, in the county of Olallam and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Pins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and'to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention in perspective, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal View in section.
This invention is designed to provide a hairpin of improved character and one which is not only ornamental but which forms a secure fastening for the hair.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the head of one of my improved pins, said head being in the form of a disk or button of any suit-able configuration or of such ornamental design as may be desired. The shank of the pin consists of two concentric circular coils Ct and b of wire, whose free ends terminate in downwardly bent points cl, arranged oppositely with respect to each other. The inner portion of each coil is adjacent to and parallel with the outer portion of the other coil. The starting portion of each coil, that is to say, that portion thereof which extends from the central portion of the disk or button to the beginning of the coil proper, forms a clamping-arm, between which and the under side of the said disk or Serial No. 601,901. (No model.)
button the hair is caught and held. Usually both coils are formed from one piece of wire, in the manner indicated in the drawings, the central portion of said wire being soldered or otherwise firmly fastened to the head.
It will be apparent that in use the bent points at will readily catch and enter the hair and that by a simple rotation of the button both coils will bury themselves in the hair and fasten it securely. The pin can be readily withdrawn by a reverse rotation, but it is not likely to work loose and fall out of its own accord.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described hair-pin comprising a head, and a shank secured thereto and formed into two concentric circular coils, the inner portion of each coil being adjacent to and parallel with the outer portion of the other coil, each of said coils terminating in a point, substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described hair-pin comprising a disk or button forming a head and two concentric circular coils secured to the central portion of said head, and terminating in oppositelydisposed points, the starting portion of each coil forming a clamping-arm, and its inner portion being parallel with the outer portion of the other coil, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
