WIT/VESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM II. STOV, OF FRANKFORT,MICHIGAN.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 573,553, dated December 22, 1896. Application iiled June 29, 1896 Serial No. 597,276. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. STon/ga citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Benzie and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to In alie and use the same.
This invention relates to sash-fasteners.
My object is to provide improved and simple mechanism for sustaining a window-sash at any desired point.
The present invention is more particularly adapted for use in connection with car-windows, being of such peculiar construction that the Window-sash is prevented from sticking and yet can be easily held at any desired height.
Having this object in view the invention consists of those novel features and combina'- tions appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a sectional front elevation, dotted lines representing the abnormal position of the combined presser-bar and sash-guide, and the operatin g catch-lever being also shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3, a top sectional view.
A designates a car-window frame, and I3 the sash. The sides of the frame are as usual connected by a cross-bar l, above which is a small stationary window-sash C. The lefthand running edge of the sash is beveled, as at 2, and 3 designates the left-hand sash-guide which receives said edge. The other side of the window-frame is cut out to form three pockets 4, 5, and 6, the upper and lower ones of which are similar and preferably lined with metal, as shown. These pockets are triangular and have their base higher than their apex.
D designates a combined presser-bar and sash-guide which is providedwith a bevel '7 and a straight portion 8. The right-hand running edge 9 of the sash is suitably beveled to conform to this presser-bar, which also serves as a guide for saidsash. The rear face of the bar is provided with upper and lower triangular projections 10 and 11, which are adapted to iit pockets 4 and 6, while a central curved pivot-block l2 is adapted for reception in the central pocket 5.
E designates an operating catch-lever. This lever is journaled in a bearing-box 13, sunk in the window-frame, and is provided with a crank-arm 14, which is pivotally connected to the pivot-block. The outer portion of the lever is bent into an arm l5, which terminates in a thumb-grasp 16. The upper portion of the arm is bent into a spring-loop 17, which serves to give an even yet unstrained pressure on the presser-bar. Y
F designates a catch which is adapted to cooperate With the catch-lever and hold the latter rigid when the presser-bar is against the sash to prevent the latter from falling after once being raised.
The operation is simple and obvious and as follows: The window-sash is first raised to the desired height and the arm then rocked to the right until in engagement with the catch. Then this occurs, the presser-bar is thrown evenly against the sash and the latter is firmly held in position. On releasing the catch-lever the sash may be allowed to lower.
The sash can be lined with felt, so that it will be perfectly air and dust tight.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. In a sash-fastener, the combination with a sash, of a presser-bar serving as a combined guide and fastener for the sash, an operatinglever journaled in the Window-frame and having a crank-arm pivoted to the presser-bar, and catch mechanism secured to the windowframe and adapted to cooperate with the lever, substantially as described.
2. In a sash-fastener, the combination with a sash, of a combined presser-bar and guide for the sash, said presser-bar being provided with guide projections and a pivot-block adapted for reception in the window-frame, a pivoted catch-le ver having a crank-arm connected to the pivot-block, and a catch adapted for engagement and with the lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
`WILLIAM Il. STOW. Witnesses R. B. REYNOLDS, C. E. OASE.
