CARRIAGE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 24, 1913:
Application filed December 19, 1812. Serial No." 737,689.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE R. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of h lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In latching doors in the bodies of auto mobiles and other vehicles. it is desirable that the parts be held together in such way as to take up any lost motion and to hold the door firmly. It is also necessary to arrange the parts in such manner that they do not catch the wearing apparel of persons using the door.
This invention relates to a carriage lock transverse section of a door and casing to which a. lock that embodies the invention is applied; Fig. 2 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of the applied lock and adjacent portions of the door and easing, with the line 1 1 indicatingthe section on which Fig. 1 is taken; Fig. 3 is a view in section taken on or about line IIIIII of Fig. 2; Fig. 41 is a view in de-' tail of a latch plate; and Fig. 5 is a view in detail of the lock proper.
As herein indicated a door 1 has a stop 2 or rabbet strip adapted to overlie and close on the outer face of a door jamb 3, the latter preferably being provided with cushioningstops 4. A latch plate 5 is inset in the face of the jamb 3 and has a throatwith oppositely beveled or inclined faces 6. Screws 7 or like means hold the latch plate in position.
A look casing is inset in the margin of the door and is provided with outer beveled faces 9 adaptedto enter between the correspondingfaces 6 of the latch plate. The
casingas-Qheld in position by screws 10 or the like and is provided with a pair of lugs 11 either one of which, according to the arrangement of the lock on a right 'or left hand door, is apertured to form a. bearing for a pivot screw 12 that passes through the door and the lug opening into the body of the door frame. on the screw and has a rounded head 14 that is adapted to be projected by a suitably disposed spring 15 against the adjacent face 6 of the latch plate!) when the door is closed and to snap past the margin of the plate and hold the door shut when the latter is fully home.
The face of the head 14 which engages Fr es.
A latch bar 13 is pivoted l the marginal portions ofthe latch plate is I so beveled or disposed that it crowds the door inwardly and tends'to hold the stop 2 against the yielding cushions 4 and to take up any action due to permanent compression or wear of the stops.
The latch may be thrown by any pre-. ferred means, as for example, a link 15 whose inner end portion 16 hooks under the latch plate 13 and whose upper end portion, is pivoted to a rock arm 17. A suitable face 1 plate 18 affords a bearing support for the rock arm or push member 17 while the lower end portion 16 of the link travels in the slot indicated at 19 in the casing 9. The plate 18 is secured in position by suitable screws 20 or the like while the projecting portion of the push member 17 is so shaped as to present a contour that will not catch the apparel of persons passing through the door. In operation, the parts act as a spring latch when the door is closed to bring the latter into proper alinement with the door jamb and to hold it from rattling. The coacting beveledfaces of the latch plate and latch casing serve to firmly support the outer portion of the door when closed while the latch itself forces the door yieldingly and firmly against whatever stops may be provided. The parts may be applied read-' the jamb, and provided with oppositely inclined bearing faces, a latch casing on the door adapted to enter between the bearing faces of the plate and coact with the latter to draw the door to alinement, a spring latch in the casing adapted to engage the plate and draw the door yieldingly inward when the casing is approaching full engagement with the plate, awpivot member extendingthrough a guide opening in the casing and engaging the body of the door on which the latch is pivoted, and a push member projecting from the face of the door and operating the latch.
2." The combination with a swinging door and jamb therefor, of a latch plate inset in the jamb, and provided with oppositely inclined bearing faces, a latch casing on the door adapted to enter between the bearing faces of the plate and eoact with the latter to draw the door into alinement, a spring; latch in the casing; adapted to engage the plate and draw the door yieldingly inward when the casing is approaching full engagement with the plate, a pivot member eX- tending through a guide opening in the easing and engaging the body of the door on which the latch is pivoted, a link reciprocable in the body of the door and extending into the latch casing for lifting; the latch, and a push member on the door operatively connected to thelink for reciprocating the latter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
