LIQUID-BLACKING BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,462, dated December 1, 1896.

(No modem roe and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid- Blacking Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in blacking-brushes, the invention residing particularly in a dauber which is adapted to contain liquid blacking and to feed the same in small quantities to the brush part thereof.
The invention consists of a dauber which may be attached to a blacking-brush of ordinary construction, the same being made up of a cylinder or casing adapted to hold liquid blacking, a brush on the under side thereof, and an opening in its bottom, from which extends upwardly on the inside of the casing a tube which is itself perforated at points near its end. Fitting around this tube is a cap or tions in the lower end of said tube and is itself controlled by a screw extending through the top of the casing.
The invention also consists of other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

My improved dauber has been shown in the drawings in connection with an ordinary blacking-brush 1,11avin g ahandle 2 with a forward extension 3 thereon. The dauber itself is made up of a cylinder or casing 4, which is adapted to be secured to the extension 3 by means of a screw 5. For convenience the dauber-casing is made in two parts, the bottom of the lower part having bristles extendcape from the casing.

This cap 9 extends upward to a point just beneath the inner end of the screw 5 and is adapted to be controlled thereby. In the upper half of the casing 4 an opening 10 is provided, through which the liquid blackin g is inserted.
The normal position of the screw 5 is down upon the upper end of the cap 9, holding the latter over the perforations 8 in the tube 7. The liquid blacking is inserted through the opening lO in the casing 4, and with the cap 9 in its normal position no blacking can es- 'When it is desired to use v:my dauber, it is merely necessary to loosen the screw 5, removing it ashort distance from the upper end of the cap 9. Then a slight shaking movement of the dauber will cause the cap 9 to move up and down on the tube 7 intermittently, opening and closing the perforations S. As these perforations are uncovered of course a small quantity of blacking can be fed through the opening 6 for use.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
The combination with a blacking-brush of ordinary construction of a dauber therefor, made up of a casin g adapted to contain liquid blacking having a brush upon its lower end and an opening therethrough, a tube extending upwardly from said opening provided with perfo'rations at points near its lower end, a cap for said tube normally covering the perfoi-ations therein, a screw normally bearing against the upper end of said cap and means whereby said screw may be turned, substantially as and for the purpose described.
