WITNESS A TTORNEV n4: News wzrzns co. PHOYQLITNO, WASHINGTON, n. c
JOSEPH C. WVICKERS,
' inrrn ramps 1 OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLACKING BRUSH OR DAUBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 610,750, dated September 13, 1898.
Application filed February 10, 1898. Serial No. 669,830. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Josnrn C. WIOKERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking Brushes or Daubers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to blacking brushes or daubers; and the object of the same is to provide a blacking-brush which is constructed of a reservoir for holding a quantity of liquid blacking which may be supplied as needed to the bristles, so that a separate bottle of liquid blacking is not required.
The invention consists of a blacking brush or daubcr for liquid blacking constructed as hereinafter described, and defined in the claim.
This invention is an improvement on the device described and claimed in United States Patent No. 560,877, granted to me May 26, 1896, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of my improved blacking-brush. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof, the handle portion being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the upper portion of the dauber.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an annular reservoir, from one side of which projects a hollow handle B. The outer end of the handle is adapted to receive a screw-plug D, which is provided with a knob d and from which projects into the handle a shank d, furnished at its extremity with a scraperblade (1 Through a central screw-threaded opening in the top of the reservoir A works a screw-threaded spindle E, which is tipped with a knob e and which atits lower end carries a dished valve E, adapted to seat upon a leather disk C and to close the dischargeopening 0' when the supply of liquid blacking to the bristles is to be cut off. The lower portion of the reservoir A is provided with a downwardly extending annular flange A, screw-threaded upon its inner face and forming at its point of connection with said reservoir an annular inwardly-projecting flange a. An annular head G, constructed,'preferably,of metal and moldedinto suitable shape, is provided upon its periphery with screwthreads, whereby it is adapted to be secured within the flange A. The head G is provided with a plurality of sockets g, which are arranged in concentric circles therein and preferably molded. The bottom of thesesockets g is provided with suitable apertures by which the bristles, when inserted in said sockets, can be securely held therein.
A cover-plate F is arranged between the upper portion of the head G and beneath the leather disk 0 and is provided at its central point with a downwardly-projecting tubular flange f, the lower end of which projects through an opening formed in the head G and affords a passage through which the blacking flows from the reservoir to the bristles. The lower portion of the spindle E is provided with stirrer-blades e, arranged adjacent to the valve E, and the extremity of the spindle E is provided with a scraper-blade cl, which is arranged within the tubular flange f and is adapted to free the same when clogged. In the top of the reservoir A is provided a vent ct for the admission of air, and a valve H is arranged so as to close said vent and is pivoted near its outer end to the projecting portion of the spindle E. A suitable spring h is arranged beneath the outer end of said valve, so as to keep it normally pressed against the vent-opening a.
In order to charge the reservoir, the plug D is removed and the liquid blacking poured through the handle thereinto, while if the passage through the handle becomes stepped up to any extent a clear passage is made by the working of the scraper-blade d around in it. Should the blacking be a little thick or require stirring, so as to flow more freely out of the reservoir, the spindle E is rotated, thus moving the stirrer-blades e, which radiate from the spindle, around in the reser Voir. The reservoir, handle, and head for holding the bristles are preferably made of aluminium; but they, as well as any of the other parts, can be made of any suitable ma terial desired.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A blacking-brush composed of a reservoir having a hollow handle communicating therewith at one side, an annular flange formed on the lower side of said reservoir, a circular head arranged Within said flange and provided with sockets in which the bristles are secured, a cover-plate arranged on top of said head and provided with a tubular flange extending downwardly therethrough, a leather disk mounted on said cover-plate and having a central opening corresponding with the opening in said tubular flange, a spindle adjustably mounted in the top of said reservoir and passing through and adapted to close said opening, and said tubular flange, a valve secured to the lower portion of said spindle and adapted to be seated upon said leather JOSEPH o. wIoKERs Witnesses L. M. MULLER, M. A. KNOWLES.
