UNITED STATES g PATENT OFFICE.
ALLAN FREEMAN VOLK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,504, dated September 29, 1896.
Application filed August 16, 1895. Serial No. 559,483. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN FREEMAN VoLK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to tobacco-pipes; and the object thereof is to provide a pipe having improved means for cleaning the stem thereof and for preventing the fouling of the stem and pipe.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, which represents a central vertical section of a pipe and the stem thereof provided with my improvement. In the practice of my invention Iprovide a bowl A of the pipe, which may be of any desired form, with the usual stem B. The stem B is provided with a central bore 0, which is in communication with the bowl of the pipe by means of a passage D, formed in the bottom thereof, and said central bore of the stem and the passage D are also. in communication with a longitudinal bore E, formed in the back lower portion of the bowl, which is adapted to be closed bya screw-plug F. Connected with the end of the stem B is a mouthpiece G, which is enlarged at its inner end, as shown at H, and formed therein is a cavity or chamber K. WVithin the central bore 0 of the stem is placed a tube L, the outer end of which projects into the chamber or cavity K, and formed in the upper side thereof is a perforation M, and the inner endof said tube L is inclined, as shown at N, and adapted to abut against a shoulder formed at the end of the central bore 0, and formed in the inclined end of the tube L is a port or opening 0.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. The mouthpiece G is connected with the stem B by means of a screw-thread and is removable therefrom, and the tube L may also be removed when desired. In use the cavity or chamber K will receive any fluid substances from the mouth, and the same will be prevented from entering the tubeL by reason of the fact that the perforation M is in the upper side thereof, and all ashes or other substances which may pass through the passage D in the bowl A will be received in the bore or opening E, and will be removed therefrom by removing the screw-threaded plug F. As thus formed it will be practically impossible for any nicotine or other substances to enter the tube L. If in use, however, any substances of any kind should enter said tube L, the same may be easily cleaned by removing the mouthpiece and withdrawing said tube, and it will also be seen that the entire stem, the mouthpiece, and the bowl of the pipe, together with thepassages E and D, may be thoroughly cleaned in this operation.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof as herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A pipe consisting of bowl and stem wit-h the usual communicating passage between them,
a mouthpiece having an enlarged interiorly-- screw-threaded end screwed on the free end of the said stem, whereby a chamber is formed at that end of the stem, said stem being provided wit-h a bore extending its whole length and through the outer wall of the lower back portion of the bowl a straight tube with one closed and one contracted end and with a peripheral opening in the closed end and a shoulder on the other end, fixed in said stembore with its closed end projecting into the end chamber and its shoulder end against a corresponding shoulder in the stem-bore, and a plug normally closing the open end of said bore, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as herein shown and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of August, 1895.
ALLAN FREEMAN VOLK.
