According to the invention there is provided a smoking pipe having a bowl, shank and stem. In the shank is removably inserted a cylindrical tube having an opening communicating with a lower opening in the bowl for collecting tar, waste and ashes, and fine terminal openings for straining the smoke and for cooling the smoke.

It is therefore a principal object of the invention to provide a smoking pipe provided with means removably inserted in the shank for collecting tar, ashes and waste.

A further object is to provide a hollow cylindrical insert for a smoking pipe, the insert having a lateral opening for communicating with an opening in the bowl of the pipe, having a closed end formed with line openings for screening and straining the smoke, a plug end and spring means for retaining the insert in the pipe.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:

Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a smoking pipe embodying the invention, parts being shown in e1evation.

Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are fragmentary sectional views on an enlarged scale taken on lines 2 2, 3-3 and 4-4, respectively, of Fig. l.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cylindrical insert for the pipe.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the plug employed with the insert.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 6, there is shown a smoking pipe l having an upright bowl 11 in which is a lower opening 12 communicating with a bore 16 in the shank 14. The shank may `be integrally formed with the bowl. In the cylindrical bore 16 is removably inserted a cylindrical tube 20. This tube, as clearly shown in Figs. 1-5, has an elongated lateral slot or opening 22. At the outer end is removably secured a wood plug 23. The plug has a. knurled head 26 with a cylindrical shank 24. The shank United States Patent O 24 fits frictionally in the open extended end of the tube 20. A pair of leaf springs 25 are secured to the tube 20 by pins or rivets 27 passing through shank 24 of the plug. 'Ille external head 26 permits the tube to be inserted into and withdrawn from the pipe. Shank 14 has guide grooves 29 to receive the leaf springs frictionally, in a tight joint.

The other end 3i of tube 20 is closed and is provided with a plurality of fine openings 32 near its upper portion. These openings serve as passages for the smoke and screen out ashes and ne tobacco particles. Slot 22 permits the passage of smoke from the bowl to the tube and to collect ashes, tars, and debris from the bowl. In addition, the elongated metal body of the tube serves to take up heat from the smoke to cool it. A space 34 may be provided in the shank 14 between the tube 20 and stem 36 to serve as a cooling chamber for the smoke. Stem 36 is tted into the other open end of shank 14. The tube can be cleaned effectively through ythe long opening 22. A suitable iilter can be placed in chamber 34 if desired.

The tube 20 is preferably made of metal such as aluminum., brass or copper. The pipe itself may be made Of briar, metal, clay, meerschaunr, hardwood, and the like.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that l do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as delined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

ln a smoking pipe having a shank with a cylindrical bore open at opposite ends and a bowl opening at its lower end into a side of the bore, an insert in said bore cornprising a cylindrical tube having a lateral slot communieating with the opening in the bowl to provide passage for smoke from the bowl to the tube, said tube having a plug attached to one end thereof for inserting the tube into said bore, the other end of the tube being closed and formed with ne openings for screening smoke passing therethrough, said plug having a head1 located outside the shank and a cylindrical portion fitted in said bore, said bore being formed with a plurality of spaced grooves, said tube being made of metal having high heat conductivity, and spring means removably holding said tube in the bore, said means being frictionally tted in said grooves.
