TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,324, dated September 29, 1896. Application filed March 23,1896. Serial No. 584,421. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOEL U. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and'State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to those trusses which are provided with adjustable pads, and my improvement includes a novel combination of devices that enables such pads to be revolved completely around their pivots or other couplings and then positively locked in any desired position, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of a truss to which my improved pad is applied. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the pad and its immediate attachments, a pair of screws used therewith being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a similar elevation of said pad after its attachments have been removed. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the meeting surfaces of a pad-plate and nut constituting portions of said attachments. Fig. 5 is a greatly-enlarged section of the pad, taken at the line Z Z of Fig. 1.
The pad proper, A, maybe of any desired size, shape, and material; but in the present case it is oval in length, convex at back, as seen in Fig. 5, and its front is flat to enable the ready attachment thereto of a plate B, having a circular orifice O, as represented in Figs. 2 and 4:. The front of this pad-plate B is smooth, but its rear is notched, indented, or corrugated radially around the orifice O, as at D, to permit the engagement of one or more teeth or other detents E, projecting from the front of a nut F, the latter being usually a disk with a pair of threaded holes G G to admit screws II 1-1. These screws traverse a longitudinal slot I of an arm J, attached at any suitable angle to the end of an ordinary truss-band K.
L is an orifice or cavity in the front of the pad A to admit the nut F.
In fitting my truss together the screws H H are first passed through the slot I of arm J and then through the orifice O of pad-plate B, after which act the threaded ends of said screws are engaged with the perforations G G of the nut F. Plate B is next secured to the front of pad A, and the truss is at once ready for use, the various adjustments of the same being effected in the following manner:
By first loosening the screws H II the pad A can be shifted along the slot I and also revolved until it reaches a suitable angle, and
then said screws are tightened, the result being the firm engagement of the detents E with the notches D of the plate 13. Consequently the pad is now positively locked in position and cannot revolve around the screws H H, neither can these coupling devices shift along the slot I. In some cases, however, this slot can be omitted and the screws pass through separate perforations in the arm J, as shown at j j in Fig. 5; but when this construction is resorted to said arm should be slotted, as indicated by the dotted lines j in Fig. 1, to enable it being adjusted longitudinally of the truss-band K. Finally, the right is reserved of applying a pad to each end of said band, and of attaching the latter to the wearer by any suitable system of straps, buckles, &c.
I claim as my invention The pad A provided with a perforated and indented plate B O D; the nut F, having threaded apertures G G, and detent E; an arm J, slotted longitudinally at I; and a pair of screws H, H, that traverse said slot and engage with said apertures G, G, for the purpose described.
