Beit known that I, J AMES M. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Play-Pipes for Firemens Hosey of which the The object of my invention is to so construct the play-pipe that the range of the play of the stream Will be increased; and my invention consists in the combination of longitudinal ribs and circumferential grooves in the body of the play-pipe, as hereinafter fully set forth. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 pipe provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a rear end view of the pipe.
In the drawings, A represents the attaching portion of the body of the play-pipe to which the handles B are secured, the tapering middle portion 0 of the play-pipe being connected to the portion 13 by means of the screw-thread ct, the said middle portion being provided with the integral parallel longitudinal ribs Z) I), which serve to guide the periphery of the flowing stream of water in the'direction of its axis'l'and. prevent tendency of rotation, and to the outer end ofthe middle portion Gis secured the tapering outer portion Dby means of the screw=thread c, the said outer portion being provided with the series ofcircumt'erential grooves 61 d, which serve to form the slight intervening abrupt edges 6 e, adapt t ed to act frictionally upon the periphery of the flowing stream, and to the end of the outer portion D of the body of the play-pipe is secured the nozzle E by means of the screw thread f.
By the employment of my improvement the efficiency of the play-pipe in throwing'the' water to a distance will be greatly increased. I claim as my invention In a play-pipe for firemens hose the com bination of the nozzle, with the body portion provided with the series of longitudinalribs, and the circumferential grooves having the intervening abrupt edges, which act frictionally upon the stream, substantially as described.
