Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed January 21, 1910. Serial No. 539,237.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE OLNEY, of 116 Collins street, Hobart, Tasmania, Commonwealth of Australia, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spraying Attachments to Garden-Hose, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide means whereby a fine spray may be obtained for watering gardens, lawns and other purposes, and consists of a hollow casting that is furnished in its face with a long narrow slit or opening. The casting screws on to the nozzle of a hose or other suitable vehicle for conveying water under pressure, and the chamber within the casting has a floor which inclines upward and toward the opening in its face, through which the water issues.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the device, the discharge opening in the nozzle extending slightly beyond the end thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view of the spray, and Fig. 4 is a front view of a nozzle showing the discharge end rounded outwardly about the discharge opening.
The hose 5 has the usual attachment 6 which is adapted to be screwed into the nozzle 7 having the female thread 8. The nozzle is itself threaded on its forward part with a male thread that meshes with the internal screw in the chamber 9. The latter is further provided with the narrow horizontal opening 11 in its face positioned outside the center thereof, and an inclined floor 12, against which the jet of water issuing from the nozzle will impinge. One wall of the opening 11 should be parallel with the floor 12 and the other wall should coincide with said floor as shown in the drawing to facilitate the discharge of the water which, after delivery from the nozzle 7 passes through the chamber 9 and emerges from the opening 11 in the form of a fine fanlike spray.
It will be observed that the parts constituting my invention are few and that each is formed solid in metal. Thus the device will operate for years without getting out of order and without the necessity for repairs. Should any obstruction succeed in getting into the chamber 9, it can be easily removed by unscrewing that member from the nozzle 7.
If desirable, the chamber 9 may be unscrewed from the nozzle 7 and the latter used to deliver a solid stream of water in the ordinary way.
I claim The combination with a hose nozzle, of a hollow casting having a floor inclined from one side to a point beyond the center thereof and a narrow opening in the end thereof, a continuation of said floor forming one side of said opening, and means for connecting said casting to said nozzle, said nozzle being provided with a small discharge opening positioned above and spaced apart from said floor, whereby a jet from the nozzle strikes upon the inclined fioor and is delivered through said narrow opening in a thin spray.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE OLNEY.
