UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. RATHBUN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
LAWN-SPRINKLER.
SPEGIFICATIONVformng part of Letters Patent No. 568,042, dated September 22, 1896.
Application filed December 6, 1895. Serial No. 571,284. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Y
y Be it known that I, CHARLES D. RATHB'UN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent'and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprin-- klers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lawn-sprinklers that are designed to be attached to the nozzle of an ordinary gardenhose; and its objects are, iirst, to provide an attachment with which the flow from a hose- `nozzle may be readily converted from a direct stream to a spray, and vice versa, and, second, to provide an attachment for hose-nozzles with which all danger of throwing water upon the operator is averted. I attain these bjects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure l is a side view of a hose-nozzle with Iny attachment shown in longitudinal section and this position to convert the flow of water into a spray for sprinkling purposes, and Fig. 4
2 is a side view of a nozzle with my attachment in position to allow of the flow of a of brass tubing of about the relative size shown in the drawings. This tubing is pivoted at one end `to the ball B or the end of the nozzle by means of a screw E at each side,
or suitable device, in the usual manner, so that it may be readily thrown to one side or the other, as indicated in the drawings. When the tube is thrown to the position shown in Fig. l, the stream of water Dcoming incontact with the surface of the tube is thrown from its direct course and diverges to flow over the entire internal surface and form. a diverging spray, as indicated at D', while, with the tube in a direct line with the nozzle, as in Fig. 2, the flow of water from the nozzle will be direct and natural.
I am aware that there have been several devices produced to attach to the nozzle for the purpose of forming a temporary spraying device, but with all such there'is great danger that when thrown in position to diverge the flow of water from the nozzle a back action takes place and the spray is for the moment thrown back over the operator, to his great discomfort. With my device this difficulty is wholly averted by the walls of the tube being in position to absolutely prevent such action.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a lawn-sprinkler, a hose-nozzle having the end fitted to form a water-tight joint with a plain cylindrical tube regardless of the relative position of said tube to the nozzle, with a plain cylindrical tube having an inner diameter uniformly of the diameter of the end of the nozzle and pivoted to be thrown to different angles with said nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
