FRANCIS J. FRENCH, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOB 0F ONE-FOURTH TO WILKIN TOWLE. ONE-FOURTH TO JAMES H. McCONKEY, KENNEDY, ALL or CLEVELAND, 01110.
AND ONE-EIGHTH TO FRANK B.
COMBINATION I-IOSE NOZZLE AND SPRAYER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. FRENCH, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Hose Nozzles and Sprayers,of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to combination hose nozzles and sprayers, and is especially adapted and intended for use on garden hose.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device which may be used either as a sprinkler or as a shower sprayer, an ordinary or sprinkling outlet being provided for the one purpose, and another outlet for the other purpose, these out-lets being controlled by a valve so that when one is closed the other is open. The nozzle may be held in the hand for sprinkling, while for spraying it may rest on the ground.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the nozzle. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 isa section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of the same, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55, of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a tapered nozzle body or barrel provided with a mouth piece 6 preferably screwed thereon. Behind the mouth piece the body is enlarged or shaped to form a. valve casing, containing a turning plug valve 7 with a port 14 therein which establishes the straight way passage through the nozzle when the plug is turned to proper position. On one end the plug has a circular collar or cupped piece 18, fastened thereto by a screw 19, and this collar serves as a handle for turning the plug and also serves as a base for the nozzle to stand on when it is placed on the ground so as to deliver the shower spray upwardly.
The shower spraying device is mounteclon the end of the plug opposite to the collar 18,

and comprises a disk 15 fixed to a screw pin 16 which is screwed into the end of the plug over a passage 13 therein which communicates with the bore of the nozzle body when the valve is turned to shut off the main way 14. A ring 17 is screwed on the exposed end of the plug under the disk 15, and this ring 17 may be adjusted in or out to vary the distance or outlet space between the same and the edge of the disk 15, thereby varying the amount and nature of the spray which issues therebetween.
For varying the delivery at the mouth piece 6 I provide a ball 9 carried at the end of a screw 8 which may be turned to advance the ball to position behind the outlet opening of the mouth piece, or retracted to withdraw the ball therefrom; and by such manipulation the nozzle may be used as desired to give a more or less divided or obstructed stream.
It will be seen that by turning the plug to one position the straight nozzle is used. By giving the plug a quarter turn in one direction the flow is diverted through the passage 13 and out around the disk 15 in the form of a shower spray; or by giving the plug a quarter turn in the other direction both ontlets are closed.
Having thus described my inventioinwhat I claim as'new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is The combination of a nozzle body, a turning plug valve extending across said body, a collar at one end of the plug, forming a bandle to turn the same and a base for the nozzle to stand on, said valve having a passage communicating with the bore of the body and extending to an outlet at the opposite end of the plug, and a spreader at said outlet.
In testimony whereof, I do atlix ture in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS J. FRENCH.
