To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1. WILLIAM A. TEALL. a citizen of the United States; residing at Eau Claire, in the county Cir of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Hosel\'ozzle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hose nozzles that are employed in connection with length of hose for the purpose of sprinkling lawns and the street in front of the I suing from the nozzle may be broken up into a fine spray or mist.
With thtse and other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accoiripanying drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hose nozzle constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof with the removable spray cap attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the removable spray cap.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a nozzle tube constructed of suitable metal and in the usual manner and provided at one end with the interiorl'y threaded attaching collar 2, which provides means for readily attaching and detaching the nozzle to and from an ordinary hose in the usual manner, and at its opposite end the said nozzle tube is branched to form two or more separate inwardly curved branch jet arms 3. The branch jet arms3.are formed integral with the nozzle 2, and are curved or bowed inwardly toward each other to convergently dispose the outer discharging ends thereof, whereby the streams of water that issue from the said jet arms will meet or cross at a point slightly beyond the same, and under the force of the head of water will break up into a line sprinkle that will be thrown quite a distance beyond the nozzle in order that lawns or other places may be quickly and readily sprinkled. At their outer discharging ends both of said jet arms 3, are provided with the annular ropnded knobs 4, and one of said jet arms is further provided at a point intermediate of its ends with a tapered valve bearing 5, to accommodate therein the turning plug 6, of an ordinary thumb valve 7, whereby means shall be provided for cutting off the flow of water from that particular jet arm when it is desired to throw a solid stream from the other valveless jet arm. By reason of the curvature of the said jet arm it will be readily understood that when the hose, together with the nozzle, are laid fiat on the ground and the flow of water cut oil from the valved jet arm, and the other jot arm having its tip end disposed upward, a solid unbroken stream will be thrown upward at an angle of aboutiorty-five degrees, thereby dispensing with the necessity oi'having a support for holding up the nozzle when a single stream is left running.
When it is desired to break up the sprinkle caused by the meeting of the two streams from the jet arms, into a fine spray or mist, the removable flared spray cap 8, is employed. The spray cap 8, is of a substantiallyconical shape flaring outwardly, and is provided at one end with the flared attaching ntck t), having.
therein a screw groove, 10. that is adapted to engage over the annular rounded knobs 4, at th outer oxtremities of the jet arms 3, said flared attaching neck 9, projecting a distance beyond the connection of the groove thereof with said rounded knobs, in order to snugly embrace a portion of the outer curved ends of the jet arms 3, and firmly secure the cap in position on said arms. The outwardly flared or coiiical spray cap 8, is provided at its outer circular edge with the inturned retaining flange or bead 10, that is adapted to engage over the edges of the wire gauze disk 11, which provides means for breaking up the sprinkle caused by the meeting jets of both jet arms into a fine spray or mist that is spread over a large area, and when only one of the jet arms is allowed to run with the spra 1 cap attached in'position; the stream ot water from that jet arm will be broken up into assprinkle that will be discharged to a greater distance than when the two streams are running with the spray cap on the nozzle. At this point it is to be noted that the effectiveness of the spray cap is due to the use of the wire gauze disk which produces an entirely different result from the ordinary rose jets that consist of a perforated plate or disk of sheet metal. These perforated plates or disks of sheet metal simply retard the flow of water causing it to break up into thin streams or to fall in drops, whereas by the employment of a wire screen or gauze, there will be no material resistance to the flow of water frgm the nozzle, even though the stream oi water is discharged under considerable pressure, and
as the water under force passes through the wire screen or gauze it is broken up into a fine spray without causing any drip that is usual in the ordinary rose jet, and
therefore the herein-described spray cap can be readily attached and detached without wetting up the hands and feet of the operator.
Changes. in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the-principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 2-- l. A nozzle, comprising a tube having spaced ,ict arms projecting therefrom, and a spray cap detachably engaged with and supported by both arms and furthermore having a common chamber that receives the discharge from both arms. said chamber having a foraminous discharge wall.
2. In a hose nozzle, the combination With convergently disposed branch jet arms having the discharged ends spaced apart and provided with enlargements, of a spray cap supported by and detachably mounted on the arms, said cap having a neck that surrounds and is engaged with the discharge ends of both arms. said neck having an interior seat that receives the outer sides of the enlargements and said cap having a foraminous wall.
3. Anozzle comprising a tube having spaced integral branch arms, a turning plug located in one of the arms for cutting 0d the iiow of liquid therethrough, a flared spray cap having aneck that lsdetachahiy engaged on and supported by the outer ends of the branch arms, and a screen extending across the outer flared end of the cap.
