CHANGEABLE FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,595, dated Septemberl 15, 1896. i Application filed March 16, 1896. Serial No. 583,490. (No model.) Patented in Germany August 6, 1894, No. 76,375?.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HORNEBURG, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Goehren auf Ruegen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Furniture, (for which I have obtained German patent, dated August 6, 1894, No. 76,375,) of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in changeable furniture, and has for its object to provide a compact and inexpensive article of this character which will be adaptable for ready transformation into a table, bed, and a settee or bench. The article will also have folding chairs attached thereto and it will be provided with a compartment adapted to receive bedding and also'with drawers adapted to contain Wardrobe, dto.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specically set forth in the annexed claims.`
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiicaton, Figures l, 2, and 3 illustrate the device in use as a bench. Figs. 4 and 7 show it arranged as a bed. Figs. 5, 6, l0, l1, and 12 illustrate the device as used as a table, clearly showing the chairs as they will appearwhen adjusted for use and Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate in detail a form of fastening adapted for use in holding the parts together.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, a box c, which is provided with arms or end pieces d. These said end pieces are provided with slots CZ, which slots engage with clamping-screws g.
Mounted upon the arms cl are two longitudinal plates e, which have brackets j' attached thereto. These said brackets engage with the side arms CZ and with clampingscrews g, passing therethrough.
The device is further provided with drawers ct and with folding seats l. These said seats have folding legs m hinged thereto, and they are maintained in position when adjusted for use by means of collapsible braces n, which are hinged together at their center portion.
The two plates @,Which are adapted to form, respectively, the surface of a table, the back of a seat, and the side walls of a bed, may be provided at any suitable location along their longitudinal point of contact with a bolt t', which said bolt has hooks thereon adapted to pass through slots l of adjacent plates 2 and 3, which are secured, respectively, to the edges of the longitudinal plates c. As a means for operating the said bolt it is provided With an outwardly-extended handle 'i'. The brackets f are further secured by means of a strap 7o, which maintains the plates c in engagement with each other in their several positions.
In operating the device, when it is desired to be used as a bench, for instance, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, the two plates c are secured by means of the bolt t', and they are then placed in an upright position and locked by means of the screws g. Then to` transform the article into a table the said two plates will be swung around into horizontal position and similarily locked, as illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, l0, 11, and l2, and when the article is used in this form the chairs Z will be caught into place and extended, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. In Figs. 10, ll, and l2 I have shown a modiiied form of chair, which comprises hingedV leaves Z', legs m', folding' braces n', and hinged longitudinal extensions o.
When it is desired to use the device as a bed, the chairs are all placed in folded positions and the two side plates or walls e are unbolted and turned over into opposite positions bearing on the side angular edges of the arms CZ, when they are locked by means of screws g, whereby a bed having -two secure side walls is provided.
The compartment o has a hinged top cl2, and the drawers ct are provided with suitable locks and handles, whereby a very handy article of furniture is produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A piece of interchangeable furniture, comprising a box havin g two side walls thereon and drawers therein and two end walls, and two longitudinal plates havingbrackets thereon, which brackets are pivotally at- IOO tached to the said end Walls; and folding chairs, substantially as shown and described.
2. As an article of furniture, the combination of the box having drawers therein 5 and slotted end walls extended upwardly therefrom, and the two longitudinal plates having brackets thereon which engage with the said end Walls through the medium of screws which pass respectively through the 1o slots of the end walls and the brackets of the longitudinal plates; with the folding chairs7 substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 28th 15 day of February, 1896.
' JOHN HORNEBURG.
