owing to the fact that in fastening the but` ton to the fabric the force used to upset or curl the tack within the button and secure it in place would, in many instances, cause the outer cloth covering on'the face of the button to be broken or disintegrated by impinging it against the die Vadjacent to the button-face, and this result followed even though said die were provided with a smooth or polished surface.

The object of our invention is to overcome this difficulty and to provide a cloth-covered button which may be secured to the fabricl by means of a tack or metal fastener without injury to the cloth covering.

With this end in view our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be herel inafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional view of our improved button, showing the cushion extending entirely across the top of the button. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the button with the face-plate and cushion removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the cushion extending partially across the button. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the button shown in Fig.V 3 with ythe top or face plate removed. Fig. 5 is a view similar to that shown in Fig.`3 after the button has been attached to the cloth or fabric.

Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the under or lower plate of the button, to which is secured the hub B, and Cthe top or face plate covered on its outer Vv'side or with the cloth or fabric c,*the several partsbeing secured together in the usual manner, as shown.

Vithin the button is secured the die or anchor D, preferably made of one piece of metal and extending downwardly within the hub B, the top or face plate d of said die being slightly lowered or separated from the faceplate C of the button.

Between the top plates C of the button and 6o d of the die is inserted a cushion E, preferably made of soft metal, such as lead, and extending entirely across the button, as shown in Fig. l, or partially across, as shown in the other figures. The object, purpose, and effeet of this cushion is to take the force of the blow or injurious pressure exerted by the button-fastening machine on the face of the button by slightly yielding thereto, and thus save the cloth covering the face of said but- 7c ton from disintegration or injury.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes or modifications might be made in the constructionand arrangement 8o of the die and in the several parts of the button without departing froml our invention,the gist of which lies in the use of a cushion inserted between the die and button-face to prevent injury to the cloth covering. therefore, limit our claims to the exact details of construction shown and described, but

What we claim is- 1. A 'cloth-covered button constructed with a die and face-plate, and a cushion inserted 9o between them, substantially as and for the purpose described. f
