UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. S'WAIN AND YEATES REESE OONNER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES AND DAVID F. PENINGTON, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATIO1\ forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,825, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed August 25, 1892. Serial No. 444,076- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES E. SWAIN and YEATES REESE GONNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in buttons the object thereof being to provide a neat and efficient separable button adapted for use as a badge or for any other desired purpose, and the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating our invention: Figure 1 is a side elevationof our improved button. Fig. 2 is adetail view showing the several parts of the button detached from each other.
Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts throughout both figures of the drawings.
A denotes the knob or disk which forms the face of the button, said face being engraved, ornamentally shaped, or otherwise enfigured, or made plain, accordingly as may be preferred or desired. The disk A is provided on its rear side with a screw-threaded shank a, which may or may not be integral with the disk A.
l3 designates the back piece or disk which is made separate from the front knob and preferably smaller in diameter. This disk B is provided with the preferable integral shank I), having a longitudinal passage I) through it. The shank b is externally and also internally screw-threaded. Said shank may be made of any desired size but will be sufficiently large in diameter to permit of the arrangement of the passage b therein. The shank bis designed to be screwed upon the shank a by causing the passage 1) to receive the shank a, thus enabling the two separable disks A and B to be connected together.
0 denotes a third intermediate disk or washer having preferably about the same dikind of designation thereon.
ameter as the disk 13 and having a central in ternally-screw-threaded opening 0, which allows the disk C to be screwed upon the shank b and adjusted thereon, nearer to or farther away from the disk B. The washer C may be formed at its center with a flange 0', surrounding the internal screw-threaded opening 0 and for the purpose of enabling a longer screw thread to be cutin the edge of the open ing so that the disk 0 may screw with a better hold upon the shank d.
Our button is pre-eminently adapted for use as a badge button, although it may be used for any other purpose. It will be observed that in the practicalemployment of it, the shank of the back disk will be passed through the button hole or opening from the rear and caused to project from the front side and then the washer C will be screwed firmly thereon and down tightly upon that portion of the garment which is bound thereby between the disks B and C. Afterward the front knob can be placed in position by causing the shank a to enter the passage b in the shank 1).
Numerous slight details and changes may be made in the exact construction of the various parts of our improved button without departing from the invention and we reserve the liberty of making such changes and of.
employing any kind of material out of which to make the button and also of placing any It will be furthermore observed that in the use of this button, numerous front knobs may be employed with the same back piece. Thus the back piece after it has been fixed in position will be stationary and can only be removed by detaehing the washer 0. Several front pieces may however be employed singly therewith. One can be removed and another substituted at the pleasure of the wearer.
Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described button consisting in the combination with a front diskAprovided on its rear side with a screw-threaded shank a, the back disk B having a shank b with a longitudinal passage 12' therein adapted to reeeive shank a, said shank b being externally and internally screw threaded as shown, and an intermediate disk O similar to disk B and having a central internally-screw threaded opening 0 which allows it to be screwed upon shank b and adjusted thereon toward or away from disk B, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES E. SWVAIN. YEATES REESE CONNER. Witnesses:
EDWARD DIGGINS, G. M. OUTLAND.
