J. J. WALTON.
v PUNCH. N0. 385,687. Patented July 3, 1888 wvmgmz 1 v Ly mica/Lug UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. WALTON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGN OR TO THE \VALTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUNCH.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Iietters Patent. No. 385,687, dated July 3, 1888.
Application filed May 9, 1888. Serial No. 273,344.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. WALTON, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved punch, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 00 m, Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line y y, Fig. 1.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved punch and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts of the punch hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly specified in the claim hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A des ignates the main portion or piece of the punch, having a head, B, and handle a. Head Bis slotted vertically and diagonally at b and centrally and transversely at O, as shown. The slot 0 divides the head into, upper and lower parts, a c, the part a being vertically slotted at D, forming a continuation of slot 12. In the upper face of part 0', near the front end of the head and just beneath the slotted part c, is formed an opening, (I, the inner end of which is enlarged, forming an annular recess, E. on the face next slot 0, and in this recess E is seated and secured the die-block F, which is inserted through the slot in part c. The dieblock has the usual die-opening, and from the manner of seating it in position, as shown, it will be seen that it cannot move laterally, has a firm bearing against part c, and only requires sufficient fastening to prevent its being lifted out of its seat by the die as the latter is retracted. Soft solder or cement can be employed to fasten it in its seat; or the recess E and block F may be screw-threaded and thus engaged. The dieblock, being inserted through the back of the tool, as described, can be more readily removed or replaced for repairs, and can be made to coincide with the die-punch {No model.)
accurately. The die-block and recess may be made angular in plan, so that the die-blocks 50 will be at once properly cemented when in serted in their seats.
G is the supplementary piece having the head H and handle 9. Head H is angular, as shown, and is inserted in slot 1) of head B and 55 pivoted therein by a pin, 9, which passes through the walls of slot b. Head H has an extension, h, entering slot D.
f is the die-punch, secured in the end of extension h in such position that when the han- 6o dles are closed it will pass through slot 0 and enter the die-block F, cooperating therewith.
The die-block and punch may be constructed to make fanciful or initial perforations, as usual. The pieces A and G are keptin proper 6 relative position by means of a screw-stud, I, passed through one side of head 13 and carrying a recess, 2', in head H, asshown. This stud permits the punch to be opened sufficiently to introduce a ticketor paper into slot 70 C, where the punching operation takes place.
J indicates a bent spring attached to handle 9 and turned inward, its inner end engaging in a groove, j, in handle a, near the pivot of the latter. This spring forms a loop by which 5 the punch can be suspended, and the groove j prevents its free end slipping off handle a.
Having described my invention, I claim The herein-described punch, consisting of the piece A, having aslotted head, B, divided 83 into two parts, a c, and a handle, a, grooved atj, the part 0 having an opening, d, and an enlarged recess, E, at the inner end of said opening, and the die-blocks seated in said recess, in combination with the piece G, having an- 8 gular head H and handle 9, recess 5, stud I, die-punchf, pin 9, and spring J, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 0 my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH J. \VALTON.
