SClSSORS-HOLDER..
SPECIFICATION forming part' of Leners Patent No. 368,943, dated August 3o, 18a-7.-
Appllcation filed May 1S, 18537. Serial No. 238,684. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, t may concern:
Beit knownthat I, IsAAO GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors-Holders, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to a peculiar and simple device to hold scissors which is adapted to be secured to the dress of the user by any suitable means, as a pin, whereby when the scissors are not in use they may be secured by a single motion in the said holder, and will remainA rmly in place until needed, when they may be very veasily disengaged.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a perspective view showing the scissors in position in the holder. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same. Fig.` 4. is a front view showing a different manner ofsecu ri ug the spring-tongues in place.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the rear plate, having the vertical parallel apertures or slots BB formed therein, the tongues C C, which are cut out of the said slots, being allowed to remain in place at the lower ends. The said tongues are bent at their mid- [die points to form the angular projections c c,
beveled on the upper and lower sides, and, as the upper ends of the tongues are free, it will be seen that if the said projections are pressed rearwardly the tongues will pass through the slots B.
D designates a spring-leaf secured to vor formed integral with the upper edge of the plate A and adapted to press reaI-wardlyagainst the projections c c of the tongues. The ,said leaf may be either solid or formed in any preferred ornamental design, to render the holder attractive in appearance, and a pin, E, is secured to the 'rear side of the plate A to enable the device to be secured to any desired part of the dress of the user.
The entire device is preferably made of spring-steel, and to secure a pair of scissors pressed, and when far enough up the said tongues will resume their normal positions and the'projections will pass int-o the eyes of the scissors and hold the same in place.
When the scissors are needed,it is only necessary to draw down upon them and the tongues are again depressed, allowing the scissors to be withdrawn.
In addition to the outward pressure of the spring-tongues C, the leaf D presses inwardly upon the scissors, and it will be seen that in some cases the tongues may be altogether omitted, and the spring-leaf will hold the scissors merely by the said pressure; also, the projections c, instead of being movable, may be made stationary on thev plate A.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and the scissors are attached or detached by a simple upward or downward pressure.
As an additional security, to prevent the scissors from slipping out of the holder after having been placed therein, I form the leaf D with the grooves d d on the lower side, to rel ceive the beveled projections on the springtongues. It is obvious that by, this arrangement the leaf D may be disposed closer to the plate A than if the grooves were not formed, and it is slightly more difficult to disengage the scissors.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to constructing the tongues integrally with the plate, as it is Obvious that if the said plate and leaf were made of cast or malleable metal and provided below the grooves therein with small apertures w w, as seen in Fig. 4t, and spring-tongues secured in the said apertures and provided with an enlargement or shoulder on the lower end to prevent the same from being disengaged from the said apertures, that the operation of the device would be the same as in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
Having now described the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a scissors-holder consisting of front and rear plates, A and D, bent into shape from a single piece of metal, the said plate A having depressed spring-tongues C, the points c of which ICO are adapted to engage with the grooves d, pressed spring-arms C, having a pin-clasp, E, formed in the rear side of the plate D, subsecured to the plate A in the rear of the said stantially as described. springs C, substantially as set forth.
2. In asoissors-holder,the combination, with In testimony that I claim t-he foregoing as [5 5 the plates A and D, bent into shape, as set my own I have hereto affixed my signature in forth, of the two depressed spring-tongues C, presence of two witnesses. adapted to engage with the rear side of the l plate D, substantially as described.
