SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,947, dated July 28, 1896. Application filed August 2li, 1895. Serial No. 560,361. (No muriel.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, .I ESSE SNOD GRASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio,` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gynecological Stirrups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Myinvention relates to a gynecological stirrup, and it has for its object the production of a device which can be readily applied to and disengaged from a table, bedstead, and the like, which will permit of any desired horizontal or vertical adjustment of the stirrup proper in its holder, and which can be conveniently carried in the surgeons instrumentcase.

The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a perspective View illustrating the manner of attaching my stirrup to an operating-table. Fig. 2 is a like view illustrating the stirrup attached to a bedstead. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the stirrup and holder. Fig. Al is a perspective view of the stirrup detached from its holder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the holder.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the stirrup proper, which is shaped to receive the heel portion of the foot, as shown in various views, and formed integral with a shank l and a stem 2, the plane of the heel-receiving portion of the stirrup being at an obtuse angle to the shank and stem. The shank is made larger in cross-section than the stem so as to leave a shoulder 3 for limiting the inward adjustment of the stirrup in its holder.

B represents the stirrup-holder, consisting of a clamp comprising three arms, a clampingscrew working in one of the arms, and two binding-screws, of which one is carried by each of the other arms, all the arms being formed integral. Arms b and b', which stand at a right angle to each other, are hollow, the bore et in each running longitudinally through the arm, as clearly shown in Fig. 3; and at their intersection these arms are cut away at 5, so as to uncover the respective bores, this cut-away portion 5 forming a supportingshoulder lor the shank l of the stirrup proper when the stirrup has been inwardly adjusted to its limit. Each of these arms carries a binding-screw 6, which passes through into the bore. Arm h? stands parallel with arm b, but is shorter. Through the free or outer end of arm b2 is formed a screw-threaded opening 7, through which passes a clamping-screw S, which is provided with a swiveled head 9. This head,as well as the spurs lO,i`ormed on the inner edge of arm h, may, if desired, be covered with rubber or other suitable material, so as to avoid marring the article to which the holder may be attached.

By making arm b2 shorter than arm h I economize in the weight of the device and also bring the clamping-screw in the best possible relation to the spurred arm to secure a firm attachment of the holder.

From the foregoing description it will be observed that the stem of the stirrup can be inserted and adjustably secured in either of the arms b or ZJ of the holder, and that the holder can be readily secured to either a horizontal or a vertical surface. Furthermore, the device, when not in use, can be taken apart and conveniently packed in the surgeons instrument-case or Satchel.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a gynecological stirrup, a stirrup-holder comprising a spurred and longitudinallybored arm, another longitudinally-bored arm at a right angle to the spurred arm, the bores extending throughout the length of these re spective arms, said arms being cut away at their junction so as to uncover the respective bores and each provided with a set-screw passing into the bore, a solid arm parallel with the spurred arm, and a clamping-screw passed through the solid arm, in combination with a stirrup proper having a shouldered stem adapted to be adj ustably secured in either of the bored arms.
