PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,279, dated July 21, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARY HEATH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to puzzles, and the object thereof is to provide a novel and interesting puzzle device which is simple in construction and the solution of which can be easily and quickly accomplished when once understood, but which is at first difficult to comprehend or hard to understand without being first informed as to the manner of operation.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved puzzle; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 thereof, and Fig. 3 a side view showing the method of solution.

In the practice of my invention I provide a frame consisting of a baseA and the vertical end pieces B, or this frame maybe of any preferred form.

To the ends of the end pieces B is secured an elastic cord 0, on which is hung or from which is suspended a metal strip or plate D, the ends of which are preferably formed to represent the lower limb and foot, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the middle portion of which is reduced in width, as shown at E, forming a neck on which is placed a flexible strip F of any desired material, which is folded in the middle and provided with a slot through which the neck or yoke shaped portion of the strip D is passed.

That portion of the ends of the strip or plate D below the neck E is much wider than said neck and will not pass through the slot in the flexible strip F, and the solution of the puzzle consists in removing the yoke-shaped plate or strip from the cord 0 without enlarging said slot or tearing the strip F. In order to accomplish this solution, the strip F is folded backward over the flexible cord 0, as shown in Fig. 3, and the said cord is pulled through the slot formed therein, as shown in said fig ure, after which the plate or strip D is easily removed therefrom by turning it on one side thereof, as shown in dotted lines, at the same time holding the cord 0 in the position shown in said figure.

It will be understood, of course, that the cord 0 is held taut normally, and my invention is not limited to the form of the frame B, or to other details of construction shown and described, and Itherefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A toy or puzzle consisting of an elastic cord stretched between two vertical supports a plate havinga hooked end, suspended there on, the middle portion of which plate is laterally enlarged, and a flexible strip centrally slotted and set over and upon said plate to rest over and upon said plate to rest above the enlarged portion thereof, all constructed, arranged and adapted to operate as herein shown and described.
