PAPER DOLL AND DRESS FOR SAME.

' To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARIANA T. JONES, of Boston, (Jamaica Plain,) in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Paper Doll and Dresses for the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to so construct the body of apaper doll and the dresses for the said body that the dresses may be held firmly to the body, and whereby the doll when dressed may be handled with impunity without. fear of the costume dropping from the body of said doll.

Another object of the invention is to provide fastening devices for attaching the costume to the body of a doll, said fastening devices being constructed in an exceedingly simple, durable, and economic manner, and likewise so that said fastening devices may be expeditiously and conveniently applied to the body of the doll.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the body portion of a paper doll. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a costume to be applied to the body of the doll. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the tabs or fastening devices detached from the costume and adapted to hold the costume closely to the body of the doll; and Fig. at is a horizontal section through the body of the doll, a costume placed thereon, and likewise a horizontal section through sundry of the fastening devices.

Heretofo're in the construction of paper dolls the dresses or costumes therefor have been held upon the body of the doll by means of tabs which are attached to the costume near the neck portion, being simply bent over the shoulders of the body of the doll. When such a connection is made between the body of the doll and the costume, the said costume hangs loosely on the doll-body, and if the doll is not handled carefully the costume will move laterally and even vertically to such an extent as to displace the costume or entirely separate it from the body of the doll.

The prime object of this invention is to overcome such defects and to provide a means whereby the costume may be held firmly to the body portion of the doll. To that end, at suitable points on the back of the costume A, one or more tabs B are secured'thereto, and, as shown in Fig. 3, these tabs are preferably made of a paper cover orbody 10 and a lining 11, of linen or fabric of any description, to reinforce the aforesaid body or covering of paper.

The tab preferably consists of what maybe termed a shank a, which is secured in any suitable or approved manner upon the inner face of the costume and is bent upon itself, so that the shank may fold down upon and substantially close to the said costume, and a lip-section a,which is integral with the shank, together with a handle-section a formed upon what is practically the outer face of the tab, and located at the junction of the lip a with the shank a, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Ordinarily one of these tabs B is secured to the costume at each side of the neck portion and at each side of the skirt-section of said costume, as shown particularly in Fig. 2.

The body 0 of the doll has slots 12 made therein, having practically the same location with respect to the body that the tabs B have with respect to the costume. In dressing a doll the costume is placed in the usual way upon the body of said doll, and the tabs are carried over the margin of the body of the doll, while the lip-sections a of the tabs are passed through the slots 12 in the doll-body, as shown in Fig. 4. In this manner the costume will be held firmly and securely in engagement with the body of the doll, and said dressed doll may be handled with impunity without displacing the applied costume, as heretofore stated.

If in practice it is found desirable, and especially if the body of the doll is made of a very thick material, the edge of the slots 12 adjacent to the tabs of the costume may be and preferably is beveled, so as to provide for aperfect engagement between the body of the doll and the applied costume.

If in practice it is found desirable, the handle portion a of the tabs may be omitted, but

said handle portion or section is preferably retained, since it may be employed to advantage in introducing and locating the lip portions of the tabs in the body portion of the doll.

Both the doll-body, the costume, and the attachments are made of paper or an equivalent material, strengthened by one or more layers of linen or other fabric, whereby the parts are rendered comparatively indestructible.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A doll-figure having openings at predetermined portions of the same and a covering for the said figure, and tabs secured to the inner face of the said covering, the tabs comprising a body and a lip together with a handle-section, whereby said tabs are manipulated, the tabs being so arranged on the covering as to admit of their being passed over the margins of the doll-body, and the lip portions of the tabs being entered into the openings in the said doll-body, thereby securely fastening the covering to the figure of the doll in a manner to prevent the displacement of the former, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A doll having a figure with an opening therein, a cover for the figure and a tab fixed to the cover, the tab having a portion capable of extending around the edge of the figure to the back thereof and such portion being formed with a lip-section capable of entering the opening in the figure and with a handlesection by which the tab may be manipulated, substantially as described.

3. A doll having a figure with an opening therein, a cover for the figure and a tab sooured to the cover and having a portion capable of extending over the edge of the figure and to the back thereof, such portion being also capable of passing from the back into the opening in the figure and extending to the front side thereof, substantially as described.-

4. A doll having a figure formed with an opening therein, a cover for the figure, and a" tab secured to the cover, the tab being formed of a flexible strip and being bent to form a shank which extends into a handle-section, the tab being then bent back in the direction of the shank and finally outward to form a lipsection and the tab being capable of extending over the edge of the figure so that the shank will lie at the back of the figure and the lip-section Will pass forwardly through the opening therein, substantially as described.
