MILWAUKEE, WISCGNSIN.
HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,886, dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed June 1, 1893.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, ELEANOR A. SCHLEY, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hooks for Dress- Shields, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specitication.
My invention relates to hooks adapted for securing dress shields detachably to a garment, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figurel representsa shield in position on a garment and my improved hook, showing the method of securing the shield to the garment therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a dress shield, provided with my hook for securing it to a garment. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing the improved hook and illustrating the method of attaching the shield to a garment.
The shield which is preferably made of rubber cloth or other flexible material impervious to moisture, consists of two flaps A and B folded together medially on the line a. The
shield in its folded form is to be secured to a garment G over the seam and adjacent parts at the arm hole, and it is desirable that the shield should be provided with means for readily securing it to the garment-,and for conveniently detaching it therefrom, so that the shield may be used interchangeably with several garments as occasion requires. For this purpose I provide a small metal hook O constructed integrally of elastic or resilient wire and comprising a shank c, a curved part, a bill a substantially parallel with the shank, a terminal inwardly turned point 0 arranged at an obtuse angle to the bill a, the extremity of which point is adapted by reason of its angle to the bill, to retain the bill in the material through which it is inserted, and is arranged to contact with the ring or loop guard 0 formed at the extremity of the shank c, the guard being disposed at a right angle to and in the plane of motion of the bill toward and from the shank, whereby the point, when the bill is forced toward the shank engaged by the guard and is thereby prevented from passing rearwardly beyond or athwart the guard, thus obviating the possibility of the point of Serial No. 476,239. (No model.)
proper points by stitching or cementing the edges of the tags to the shield.
If the material of which the shield is comthe pins may be inserted directly therein withoutthe use of tags, but ordinarily the tags are preferred.
The hook is secured to the shield byinsertingits pointunderthetag, thrustingitthrough the tag and drawing the hook into place so that the shank is beneath the tag or between it and the shield, the bill and point being outside of the tag over the shank and guard.
To attach the shield to a garment the shield is put in place in the garment and the bills of the hooks are inserted in the garment in the manner shown in Fig. 3 the angular point serving to prevent the hook from escaping from the garment. Four of these hooks will ordifiarily suffice to properly secure a shield preferred.
My improved hook is especially intended and adapted for use in connection with dress shields as. hereinbefore described, but as a book of this construction is also adapted for analogous purpose other than with dress shields I purpose that it shall be constructed independently and placed on the market as an article of manufacture.
I do not wish to limit the invention to a guardin the form of a ring, as any form of guard adapted to receive the thrust of the sharp point, would be within my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a hook for a dressshield, or analogous use, comprising a substantially straight shank, adapted to be secured to a shield, a bend, a bill having a free inwardly-turned obliquely-disposed terminal point continuous of the bill, said bill adapted to engage the garment, and thereby secure the shield, or other article, thereto,
to the under surface of the dress shield at posed is of sufficient thickness and strength in place but a greater number may be used if and the point adapted to be passed entirely through the garment and retain the bill in I In testimony whereof I affix my signature said garment, and a guard at the extremity in presence of two witnesses. of the shank adapted to receive the contact of the terminal point, when the bill is moved ELEANOR A. SOHLEY. 5 laterally toward the shank, and thereby pre- Witnesses:
vent the point from passing beyond or athwart C. T. BENEDICT,
of the guard, substantially as set forth. ANNA V. FAUsT.
